Armavir (Russian:Армави́р;Adyghe: Ермэлхьабл, Ermălḥabl) is acity inKrasnodar Krai,Russia, located on the left bank of theKuban River. Population:187,177 (2021 Census);[7]188,832 (2010 Census);[3]193,964 (2002 Census);[8]160,983 (1989 Soviet census).[9] As of 2020, the city has a population of 188,960, while the agglomeration has a population of 207,570. Armavir is the second-largest industrial center of Krasnodar Krai, afterKrasnodar.

History

The area of today's Armavir was first inhabited byAbazins. LaterTurkicTatars from theCrimean Khanate also settled here. As a result of theCaucasian War the remaining Abazins were forced to emigrate fromNorth Caucasia to theOttoman Empire. Armavir is also a part of the historical land of theCircassians.

The contemporary settlement was founded in 1839[2] byCherkesogai Armenians asArmyansky aul (Армя́нский ау́л). It has been known by its current name since 1848, when it was named afterArmavir, one of the historical capitals of ancientArmenia.[10] The city was the administrative center of theLabinsky Otdel of theKuban Oblast.

During theRussian Civil War of 1918–1920, a number of brutal battles took place near the city. TheTaman Army's military campaign ended in Armavir in 1918. The Soviet authority was established in Armavir in March 1920. DuringWorld War II, the city was occupied by theGerman Army. It was liberated by theRed Army in January 1943.

Administrative and municipal status

Within theframework of administrative divisions, it is, together with elevenrural localities, incorporated as theCity of Armavir—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of thedistricts.[1] As amunicipal division, the City of Armavir is incorporated asArmavir Urban Okrug.[4]

Industry

Armavir is the second-largest industrial center of Krasnodar Krai, after Krasnodar. The city is known as center for food processing, mechanical engineering and timber processing industries. Here is located one of the oldest engineering enterprises of Kuban -Kubanzheldormash, founded in 1933.
