Araihazar (Bengali:আড়াইহাজার) is anupazila (sub-district) of theNarayanganj District inBangladesh, part of theDhaka Division.[4]
Araihazar is named after the leftover 2,500Mughal soldiers ofMan Singh I that fought withIsa Khan in the17th century. The word for "two thousand and five hundred" inBangla is "Araihazar" (Bengali:আড়াইহাজারromanised: Araihajar), hence the name.
In 1921, athana (police outpost administrative headquarters) was established in Araihazar, under the former Dhaka district. Araihazar Thana's status was upgraded toupazila (sub-district) in 1983 as part of thePresident of BangladeshHussain Muhammad Ershad's decentralisation programme.[5]
Araihazar is located at23°47′30″N90°39′00″E / 23.7917°N 90.6500°E /23.7917; 90.6500. It has 111,040 households and total area 181.07 km2.
According to the2022 Census of Bangladesh, Araihazar Upazila had 111,040 households and a population of 467,547. The average household size was 4.15. Araihazar had a literacy rate (age 7 and over) of 69.34%, compared to the national average of 74.80%, and a sex ratio of 103.16.[6]
According to the2011 Census of Bangladesh, Araihazar Upazila had 77,462 households and a population of 376,550. 96,076 (25.51%) were under 10 years of age. Araihazar had a literacy rate (age 7 and over) of 41.0%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 999 females per 1000 males. 14,423 (3.83%) lived in urban areas.[7][8]
As of the2001 Bangladesh census, Araihazar has a population of 331566. Males constitute 51.75% of the population, and females 48.25%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 142883. Araihazar has an average literacy rate of 32% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.[9]
Araihazar Upazila is divided into Araihazar Municipality, Gopaldi Municipality, and 11union parishads:Bishnandi,Brahmandi,Duptara,Fatepur,Haizadi,Kalapaharia,Khagakanda,Mahmudpur,Sadasardi,Satgram, andUchitpur.[7][10]
