TheApioceridae, orflower-loving flies, are a small (about 150 species) family offlies, all in the single genusApiocera. They occur mostly in dry, sandy habitats in the deserts ofNorth America,South America, andAustralia. Other genera formerly placed in Apioceridae are now inMydidae.[1]

Diversity and biogeography

[edit]

The roughly 150 species ofApiocera are divided into four subgenera, each restricted to a different continent.Apiocera is found inAustralia,Ripidosyrma in southernAfrica,Pyrocera inNorth America, andAnypenus inSouth America.[1]

Biology

[edit]

Apiocera species are found in sandy, arid and semiarid habitats. Despite the common name, mostApiocera species never visit flowers, but rather are found running on the ground near sparse vegetation, or feeding onhoneydew beneathaphid-infested plants. They are often seen drinking from damp sand with their sponge-likemouthparts. Thelarvae ofApiocera maritima are found in sand near the high-water mark of coastal beaches.
