André Beteille (born 30 September 1934), is an Indiansociologist, writer, and academician. He is known for his studies of the caste system inSouth India.[1] He has served with educational institutions in India such asDelhi School of Economics,North Eastern Hill University (in Shillong), andAshoka University.
Beteille was born to a French father and an Indian mother.[2] He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in anthropology from theUniversity of Calcutta.[3] Thereafter he received his doctorate from theUniversity of Delhi. After a brief stint at theIndian Statistical Institute as a research fellow, he joined the faculty of sociology at theDelhi School of Economics.[4]
He has taught at universities includingOxford University,Cambridge University, theUniversity of Chicago, and theLondon School of Economics. He has also served as the Chairman of theCentre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta and of theIndian Council of Social Science Research.[4]
He was a Professor of Sociology at theDelhi School of Economics at theUniversity of Delhi where, since 2003, he remainsProfessor Emeritus ofSociology.[5] He was appointed National Research Professor by theGovernment of India in 2007.[6]
Presently, he is the Chancellor ofNorth Eastern Hill University,Shillong, Meghalaya[7] and prior to that he served as theChancellor ofAshoka University.[8][9][10]
He is a recipient of the third highest civilian honour of India, thePadma Bhushan, and was also made aFellow of the British Academy (FBA).[11] He also served on the Social Sciences jury for theInfosys Prize in 2010.[citation needed]
