Anastasios "Tasos" Katsabis (Greek: Αναστάσιος "Τάσος" Κατσαμπής; born 30 July 1973) is a formerGreek football player, who last played forIraklis Thessaloniki F.C. inGreek Super League as acentre back. Katsabis started his career as amidfielder but when he was played atPAOK,Angelos Anastasiadis tried him as acentre back because of his height.[1] It was by playing his new position that he gained his first call-up in theEthniki.
Katsabis started his career in the amateur club ofIraklis Neo Irakleio.[2] In 1992, he got transferred to the semi-professional clubAcharnaikos, at that time playing in theDelta Ethniki. Katsabis assisted the club to achieve its promotion to theGamma Ethniki by scoring 6 goals.[3] In the next season Katsabis was an automatic choice in the starting 11 ofAcharnaikos missing just one match out of 34 and scoring 7 goals.[3] His good performances attracted the attention ofAlpha Ethniki clubPanionios that signed him in the summer of 1994.
Katsabis was titular inPanionios from his first season in the club. In the1994–95 season he played in 29 matches and scored 2 goals, helpingPanionios to avoid relegation. In hissecond season for the club he featured in 30 matches and scored 3 goals,[3] butPanionios suffered relegation to theBeta Ethniki. Panionios was a firm favorite for promotion in the next season, and Katsabis propelled the club to winning theBetta Ethniki championship by scoring 11 goals in 31 games.[3] The next season was the best for the club for years as the club won theGreek Cup. Katsabis was in the starting 11 of thefinal. In theleague he featured in 28 matches and scored 5 goals.[3] After theGreek Cup success Katsabis along with other teammates (Vokolos,Nalitzis,Fyssas), attracted the attention of the top clubs in Greece. He finally signed forPAOK in the summer transfer window of 1998.
From day one Katsabis was an important first team player forPAOK. In hisfirst season he helpedPAOK to finish in the 4th position and win qualification to theUEFA CUP. In total he played in 31 matches and scored 4 goals.[3] In his next seasonPAOK ended up in the 5th position in theleague and Katsabis was once again mainly in the starting 11 (27 matches).[3] The next season brought glory to bothPAOK and Katsabis.PAOK won theGreek Cup. Katsabis captained the club in the final, a match held inNikos Goumas Stadium,Athens that foundPAOK victorious againstOlympiacos by 4–2.[4] In theleague Katsabis featured in 23 matches and scored 2 goals.[3] In his last season for thePAOK he played in 25 matches and scored 2 goals[3] helping the club to achieve its 6th consecutiveUEFA Cup qualification.
After his successful spell withPAOK Katsabis signed a contract withIraklis Thessaloniki. He has proved himself indispensable for the club being thought of as the first team choice during his nine years he played forIraklis. He featured in at least 22 matches each season of a possible 30[3] totaling over 200 appearances for the club, most were as a starter.[3] He debuted forIraklis in a 3–0 victory againstOFI in the first matchday of the2002–03 season.[5] His first goal was scored in the 16th minute of a match againstEgaleo.[6] It was the second goal of the team in a match that foundIraklis victorious by 2–0. From the2006–07 season till his retirement he captainedIraklis. In a match againstAtromitos, on 10 September 2010, inPeristeri Stadium Katsabis made his 400th appearance in the top tier of Greek football (Alpha Ethniki or Superleague).[1] Katsabis retired in a match against former clubPAOK.[7] He was lauded by Iraklis and PAOK with a standing ovation by the Iraklis' supporters when he was substituted byStamou in the 71st minute of the match.[7]
Katsabis made nine appearances forGreece.[8] Katsabis debuted forGreece as a starter in a 1–0 win againstBelgium on 5 February 1999 inNeo GSZ Stadium,Larnaca.[9] He scored his sole goal in a friendly match againstSalvador on 18 August 1999, inKavala National Stadium.[9] It was scored in the injury time of the match and was the last goal in a 3–1 win forGreece.
