Anamarie Avila Farias is an American politician who is a member of theCalifornia State Assembly from the15th district since 2024.[1] She previously served on theContra Costa County Board of Education, theCalifornia Housing Finance Agency board, and theMartinez City Council.

Early life

Avila Farias is the granddaughter of immigrants fromMexico who came to theUnited States through theBracero Program.[2]

Political career

Avila Farias was elected to a single term on theMartinez City Council in 2012, becoming the first Latina elected to the body. She was appointed to theCalifornia Housing Finance Agency Board of Directors byGovernorJerry Brown in 2015 and re-appointed byGavin Newsom in 2021.[3]

In 2017, Avila Farias and a group of activists filed a lawsuit under theCalifornia Voting Rights Act alleging theMartinez Unified School District board diluted minority-representation through at-large elections. The board ultimately paid $90,000 in legal fees.[4]

In 2022, Avila Farias made aFacebook post encouraging boycotting the4th of July because of theDobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling.[5]

Avila Farias ran forContra Costa County Board of Supervisors in 2016, losing to incumbent Federal Glover. A mailer accused her and her husband Isidro of improperly receiving a $40,000 relief for building homes from the Martinez City Council in 2008.[6]

California State Assembly

Following incumbentTim Grayson's announcement that he would run for theCalifornia State Senate, Avila Farias filed to run for theCalifornia State Assembly in the15th district.[3] Avila Farias andRepublican Sonia Ledo advanced to the general election.[7]
