Amazichthys is anextinct genus ofselenosteidarthrodire from theMiddle Famennian of theLate Devonian of theAnti-Atlas Mountains ofMorocco. It contains a single species,Amazichthys trinajsticae. It is one of a few example ofplacoderm known from whole body shape, including cartilaginous axial and fin elements.[1]
Amazichthys had a profile similar to that of fast-movingpelagic fishes, with lateral keels for stability, and alunate caudal fin, suggesting it could reach and maintain high speed.[1] Theholotype, AA.MEM.DS.8, is 89.7 cm (35.3 in) long.[1][2]
Amazichthys trinajsticae was named after the North African ethnic groupAmazigh (Berbers), and Australian palaeontologistKate Trinajstic.[1]
Amazichthys is part ofSelenosteidae, a family inside the cladeAspinothoracidi, inside ofPachyosteomorphi, along withDunkleosteoidea.
