Alistair B. Lawrence (born 1954) is anethologist.[2] He currently holds a joint chair in animal behaviour and welfare atScotland's Rural College and theUniversity of Edinburgh.[3]
Lawrence graduated from theUniversity of St Andrews with a degree in zoology.[3] He then studied for his PhD at the University of Edinburgh under the direction ofDavid Wood-Gush.[3] His 1985 thesis is entitled “The social organization of Scottish blackface sheep".[4]
In 1995 he received theRSPCA/BSAS award for innovative developments in animal welfare for his 'outstanding contribution to animal welfare research'.[1]

Lawrence is a past secretary of theInternational Society for Applied Ethology and is a supporter ofCompassion in World Farming.[2][6] He has served on the UKFarm Animal Welfare Committee and has been appointed to the council of theUniversities Federation for Animal Welfare.[6]
WithAubrey Manning he oversees the David Wood-Gush Trust Fund that set up and supports the annual Wood-Gush lecture.[2]
