Al Furqan Brigades

This article is about the Egyptian jihadist group. For the Syrian armed group, seeAlwiya al-Furqan.

TheAl Furqan Brigades (Arabic:كتائب الفرقان, also known asKitaa’ib al-Furqan) are a militant group that has been active throughout Egypt.[1] The brigades attacked acontainer ship that was passing through theSuez Canal in September 2013.[2] The group attacked a communications center inMaadi withRPGs in October 2013.[3]

According to theNational Security Agency, Al Furqan Brigades the group has received significant support and training from theAl-Qassam Brigades in Gaza.[4] His first and more media attack took place in August 31, when attackers fired rocket propelled grenades at the Cosco Asia cargo ship when it passed through theSuez Canal in Qantara,Port Said.[1][5][6]

In September 30, the group claimed in a video the killing of the Colonel Mohammed al Komi (occurred in August 14) in a drive-by attack in the Cairo-Ismailia desert highway, and the attack against a civilian accused of being an "apostate".[7][8] In October 7, the Furqan Brigades claimed an attack with rocket-propelled grenade at the Amaadi Satellite Earth station[1] inCairo,Cairo Governorate, leaving two people wounded and a satellite dish damage.[9][10][11][12]In November 29, the al Nusrah Battalion, a unit within the al Furqan Brigades claimed via a video a string of shootings incluiding the murder of Lieutenant Ahmed Ibrahim along with five officers. The incident inIsmailia in October 7,[13][14] the killing of two egyptian officers in northeast which took place in September 17.[15]
