Ahmed Almheiri (Arabic: أحمد المهيري) is anEmiratitheoretical physicist. He is currently anassistant professor ofphysics atNew York University Abu Dhabi,Saadiyat Island.[1] He is known for his works on theAdS/CFT correspondence, black hole information paradox[2] andblack hole firewalls.[3][4]
Ahmed completed hisundergraduate studies fromUniversity of Toronto in 2008. He obtained hisPh.D in physics fromUniversity of California, Santa Barbara in 2014 under the supervision ofJoseph Polchinski.[5] His thesis titledThe Black Hole Firewall and Top-Down Constructions of AdS/CFT was awarded the Winifred and Louis Lancaster Dissertation Award in 2014.[6] He has heldpostdoctoral positions atStanford University (2014–17) where he worked on the realization of theAdS/CFT correspondence as aquantum error correction code,[7] and at theInstitute for Advanced Study (2017–22)[8] during which he made contributions to calculating theentropy for theradiation of ablack hole.[2] He joinedNew York University Abu Dhabi as a faculty member in 2022.
Ahmed was jointly awarded theNew Horizons in Physics Prize by the Fundamental Physics Prize Foundation in 2021 for "calculating the quantum information of a black hole and its radiation".[4][9] He was awarded the Pride of Emirates medal in 2020 byHis Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.[1][10][11] In November 2024, he was jointly awarded theMohammed bin Rashid Knowledge Award (MBRKA) by theMohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation.[12]
A list of Ahmed's research publications can be found in theINSPIRE HEP database.
Ahmed served as an editor for the autobiographical memoirMemories of a Theoretical Physicist byJoseph Polchinski.[13]
