TheAgnes River is aperennial river of theWest Gippsland catchment, located in theSouth Gippsland region of theAustralian state ofVictoria.
Agnes River rises below Beech Hill instate forestry area within theStrzelecki Ranges, and flows generally south in a highly meanderingcourse, before reaching itsmouth inCorner Inlet ofBass Strait, southeast of the town ofToora in theSouth Gippsland Shire. The river descends 570 metres (1,870 ft) over its course.
The Agnes River sub-catchment area is managed by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
The river is traversed by theSouth Gippsland Highway betweenToora andWelshpool.
In the AboriginalBrataualung language the name of the river isKut-wut, with no defined meaning.[5]
The river derives its current name from the Ages River, after Agnes, daughter of John Gellion, an early settler,[2] and was named byGovernor La Trobe in 1845 in honour of his daughter, Agnes.[3][4]
