EmperorZeno (474–491)

Year474 (CDLXXIV) was acommon year starting on Tuesday of theJulian calendar. At the time, it was known as theYear of the Consulship ofLeo without colleague (or, less frequently,year 1227Ab urbe condita). The denomination 474 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when theAnno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.

January 18 – EmperorLeo I dies ofdysentery atConstantinople, after a 17-year reign. He is succeeded by his 7-year-old grandsonLeo II, who briefly becomes ruler of theByzantine Empire.^[1]
February 9 –Zeno, father of Leo II, is crowned as co-emperor (Augustus). He rules the empire together with his son, and stabilises the Eastern frontier.
June 24 –Julius Nepos arrives atPortus, and marches onRavenna. He forcesGlycerius to abdicate thethrone, and proclaims himself emperor of theWestern Roman Empire.
Glycerius is exiled toDalmatia (Balkans) and becomesbishop of Salona. Neither theSenate nor theGallo-Roman aristocracy decide to resist, and Nepos accepts theimperial purple.
November 17 – Leo II dies of an unknown disease (possiblypoisoned by his motherAriadne), after a reign of 10 months. Zeno becomes sole Eastern Emperor.^[2]
Winter – Zeno sends anembassy, to conclude a peace with KingGenseric. He succeeds in an agreement with theVandals, to secure the commercial routes in theMediterranean.
