Inenzymology, a3-ethylmalate synthase (EC2.3.3.7) is anenzyme thatcatalyzes thechemical reaction
The 3substrates of this enzyme arebutanoyl-CoA,H2O, andglyoxylate, whereas its twoproducts are3-ethylmalate andCoA.
This enzyme belongs to the family oftransferases, specifically thoseacyltransferases that convert acyl groups into alkyl groups on transfer. Thesystematic name of this enzyme class isbutanoyl-CoA:glyoxylate C-butanoyltransferase (thioester-hydrolysing, 1-carboxypropyl-forming). Other names in common use include2-ethyl-3-hydroxybutanedioate synthase, and3-ethylmalate glyoxylate-lyase (CoA-butanoylating). This enzyme participates inglyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism.
