The2022 VAFA season was the 121st season of theVictorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA), the largest senior communityAustralian rules football competition inVictoria.[1] The season began on 2 April and concluded on 23 September, with 66 teams participating across seven divisions under apromotion and relegation system.[2][3]

This was the first VAFA season since2019 where finals series were held andpremiers awarded, following the cancellation of the2020 season and the curtailing of the2021 season due to the impact of theCOVID-19 pandemic.[4][5]

Background

KommunityTV,News Corp Australia's live-streaming platform, began a trial arrangement with the VAFA to broadcast finals matches in 2022.[6][7]

  • Old Haileybury's score of 2.10 (22) was the second-lowest score in the club's history, almost breaking its record of 2.8 (20) againstOld Xaverians in1998.[20][32]

Ivanhoe won theDivision 2 premiership for the first time, defeatingWest Brunswick by one point in the grand final.[54][55] It was Ivanhoe's first senior premiership in any division since1969.[56][57]

This was the last season for theManningham Cobras and theYarra Old Grammarians, which merged ahead of the2023 VAFA season to form theOld Yarra Cobras Football Club.[58][59]
