The2021 Rally de Portugal (also known as theVodafone Rally de Portugal 2021) was amotor racing event forrally cars that was held over four days between 20 and 23 May 2021.[2] It marked the fifty-fourth running of theRally de Portugal. The event was the fourth round of the2021 World Rally Championship,World Rally Championship-2 andWorld Rally Championship-3, as well as the second round of the2021 Junior World Rally Championship.[3] The 2021 event was based inMatosinhos in thePorto District and was contested over twentyspecial stages totalling 337.51 km (209.72 mi) in competitive distance.[1]
Ott Tänak andMartin Järveoja were the defending rally winners.Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, the team they drove for in2019, were the defending manufacturers' winners.[4]Kalle Rovanperä andJonne Halttunen were the defending winners in the WRC-2 category,[5][a] but they did not defend their titles as they were promoted to the top class by Toyota.[6] In the WRC-3 category,Pierre-Louis Loubet andVincent Landais were the reigning rally winners,[5][b] but they did not defend their titles neither as they were promoted to the top class byHyundai 2C Competition.[7]
Elfyn Evans andScott Martin won the rally, the first of their season. Their team,Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, successfully defended their titles.[8]Esapekka Lappi andJanne Ferm won the World Rally Championship-2 category,[9] whileKajetan Kajetanowicz andMaciej Szczepaniak won the World Rally Championship-3 category.[10] The Latvian crew ofMārtiņš Sesks andFrancis Renars was the winner in the junior class.[11]
Reigning World ChampionsSébastien Ogier andJulien Ingrassia entered the round with an eight-point lead overThierry Neuville andMartijn Wydaeghe.Elfyn Evans andScott Martin were third, a further two points behind. In the World Rally Championship for Manufacturers,Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT held a twenty-seven-point lead over defending manufacturers' championsHyundai Shell Mobis WRT, followed byM-Sport Ford WRT.
In the World Rally Championship-2 standings,Andreas Mikkelsen andOla Fløene held a thirty-five-point lead ahead ofMarco Bulacia Wilkinson andMarcelo Der Ohannesian in the drivers' and co-drivers' standings respectively, withEsapekka Lappi andJanne Ferm in third. In the teams' championship,Toksport WRT ledMovisport by fifteen points, withM-Sport Ford WRT in third.
In the World Rally Championship-3 standings,Yohan Rossel led the drivers' championship, whileYannick Roche led the co-drivers' championship. DriverNicolas Ciamin and co-driverBenoît Fulcrand set in second, followed by the crew ofTeemu Asunmaa andMarko Salminen.
In the junior championship,Jon Armstrong andPhil Hall ledMārtiņš Sesks andRenars Francis by nine points.Sami Pajari andMarko Salminen were third, one point further back. In the Nations' standings,United Kingdom held aseven-point lead overLatvia, withFinland in third.
The following crews entered the rally. The event was opened to crews competing in the World Rally Championship, its support categories, the World Rally Championship-2 and World Rally Championship-3, Junior World Rally Championship andprivateer entries that were not registered to score points in any championship. Eleven entries for the World Rally Championship were received, as were twelve in the World Rally Championship-2 and twenty-five in the World Rally Championship-3. A further eight crews entered the Junior World Rally Championship inFord Fiesta Rally4s.
