• 18 August: TheNawab ofMohammad Mahabat Khanji III, ruler of thePrincely state ofJunagadh, a formerBritishProtectorate since1807 and the other small states ofBantva,Manavadar andSardargadh, were also formerBritishProtectorates since1818 of theKathiawar Peninsula despite an overallHindu majority of the population all acceded to theDominion of Pakistan, this was influenced byShah Nawaz Bhutto theDewan of the state. In response, theDominion of India claimed that the accession was invalid, since the states were surrounded byIndia and demanded aplebiscite on the future ofJunagadh andManavadar (princely state). Pakistan agreed, on condition that votes also be held inHyderabad State andKashmir and Jammu; India rejected this proposal and also refused to allow theGovernment of Pakistan any role in administering a plebiscite.

The dispute was the first serious crisis inIndo-Pakistani relations.

• 30 September: Pakistan joins theUnited Nations as a member state.

• 27 December: ADouglas C-48C (VT-AUG) ofAir India crashed into Korangi Creek en route from Karachi toBombay, killing all 23 onboard (4 crew and 19 passengers). The crash was found to have been the result of poor visibility during night hours and the instrument lights not working, with serious fault assigned to the captain. The crash was Pakistan's first deadly airliner crash.^[3]
