4 January –Benjamin Britten andPeter Pears begin a long association withDecca Records, recording four of Britten's folk song arrangements.^[1] Britten spends most of this year at the Old Mill inSnape, Suffolk, working on the operaPeter Grimes.
March –Vera Lynn goes to Shamsheernugger airfield in British India to entertain the troops before theBattle of Kohima.^[2]
19 March –Michael Tippett's oratorioA Child of Our Time receives its first performances atLondon'sAdelphi Theatre.
25 May – Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears record Britten'sSerenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings for Decca, withDennis Brain and theBoyd Neel Orchestra.^[3]
19 June – American bandleaderGlenn Miller flies to London to set up his U.S. Army Air Forces orchestra for theEuropean Theater of Operations.^[4]
28 July – SirHenry Wood, aged 75, conducts his lastPromenade Concert, evacuated to theCorn Exchange, Bedford.^[5] He dies three weeks later.
20 September –Yehudi Menuhin gives the first British performance ofBéla Bartók'sViolin Concerto in Bedford, in the opening concert of a tour with the B.B.C. Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult.
23 September – English-born composer and violistRebecca Clarke, stranded in the United States by the war, marriesJames Friskin, composer, concert pianist and founding member of theJuilliard School faculty.^[6]
3 October –Glenn Miller plays his last airfield concert in a hangar for the U.S.A.A.F. atRAF Kings Cliffe in Northamptonshire.^[4]
15 December –Glenn Miller takes off fromRAF Twinwood Farm in Bedfordshire; his plane is lost over theEnglish Channel.^[4]
Contralto Kathleen Ferrier makes the first of her recordings of thearia "What is Life?" (Che farò) fromGluck'sOrfeo ed Euridice which will rival sales by more popular singers over the next few years.^[7]
