• the transcription ofAfro-Asiatic languages (mostlySemitic languages) to represent an "emphatic s"[sˤ] as in Arabicص (Ṣād) and as in the Hebrewצ (Tzadi/Ṣādī) spoken by the Jews of Yemen and North Africa
• the orthography ofYoruba inNigeria to represent thevoiceless palato-alveolar sibilant (theEnglish "sh" sound)
