TheShattered Man is a mini-boss inEarthBound. It appears to be a mummy wrapped in brown bandages. Two of them are found in theScaraba Cultural Museum inSummers, and cannot be encountered again after being defeated. They are only capable of physical attacks and will frequently solidify party members. A generic variant, theFierce Shattered Man, appears in thePyramid inScaraba.
Due to a programming oeversight, unlike other enemies, both Shattered Man enemies remain on the field afterGiygas has been defeated. If one is left undefeated during the main story and is battled afterward, the Shattered Man provides the only way to experience agame over in the game's epilogue, resulting in aninfamous glitch. In theMother 1+2 remake, this bug is fixed and they disappear after Giygas' defeat.
The Shattered Man will only fight alone, as both of them are individual encounters. During battle, the "Sanctuary Guardian" song plays in the background.
