Scaraba is a desert region inEarthBound. It is located in theChommo region and divided into two areas: the town in the north and a vast desert in the south. Scaraba has a population of 3,212 people and 2 camels, and the average age is 112. The average temperature of 140°F in the shade, and an annual rainfall of none.^[1]

According to the Hieroglyphs from theScaraba Cultural Museum, the region was historically polytheistic. Scaraba was invaded roughly 1000 years ago, presumably by another member ofGiygas's species. ThePyramid was constructed by the residents of Scaraba for protection, but they were easily defeated. The Sphinx is probably a representation of a guardian deity in Scaraba.

Overview

Scaraba consists of two segments: North Scaraba and South Scaraba. In the north is the town and an open desert area with pyramids. The town is found in the northernmost area of the region and features a Hotel, Shop, Bazaar and Dock. Areas of the town with darker coloured sand count as part of the desert, and can result insunstroke. South of the town are several pyramids. The largest one is guarded by the Sphinx who will allow the player to enter by stepping on the circles in the correct order. The order matches the pattern described by the hieroglyphs found in theScaraba Cultural Museum and its copy, forming a star-shaped pattern.

Traversing through the Pyramid is the only way to access South Scaraba. The south area is almost completely uninhabited, however theDungeon Man can be found in the north. The far south of the area is a large body of water that separates Scaraba fromDeep Darkness.

Role inEarthBound

Ness and his friends arrive here after defeating theKraken while travelling on a boat fromToto. Their goal is to find theHawk Eye found inside of the Pyramid. The Sphinx who guards it awaits the chosen hero who can solve the puzzle to open the Pyramid. Using the knowledge from the hieroglyphs read in the museum inSummers, Ness steps on the circles in a star pattern and was allowed to enter.

After finding the Hawk Eye they exit on the south area of Scaraba. The Star Master greets them on the outside, and explains thatPoo must leave for a short time to learn theWay of the Starstorm. Once Poo leaves the group speaks to a man nearby who provides them with theKey to the tower, which is used to access theDungeon Man in the north. The team meetsBrick Road at the top, who was combined with the dungeon itself and agrees to follow the team for a shorter time. At the narrow passage south he gets caught in the palm trees, however he offers the team to use his submarine to travel across the water to reach the next destination: Deep Darkness.
