TheNintendo Entertainment System (Japanese:ニンテンドー・エンターテインメント・システム), often abbreviated as theNES, is the second home video game console developed byNintendo (the first being the Japan-onlyColor TV-Game series of consoles released from 1977-1980) and was first released in 1985. It is a redesigned and rebranded version of the previously releasedFamily Computer (Japanese:ファミリーコンピュータ) orFamicom (Japanese:ファミコン), and was first released in 1983.

Thefirst title in theEarthBound series was released for this system, though only in Japan. Sales for the Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System were high, with a strong lineup of exclusive games such asKirby's Adventure,Metroid, andIce Climber. The console's best-selling titles areSuper Mario Bros. andSuper Mario Bros. 3. The Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System was succeeded by theSuper Famicom and Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

Many games for the Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System were re-released as Virtual Console titles on the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and Nintendo Switch Online. Among these titles isMother, which was released on the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015 and on Nintendo Switch Online in 2022. Several Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System titles are included inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U as Masterpieces.
