- This article is for the boss fromEarthBound Beginnings, not to be confused with theDark Dragon ofMother 3.
TheDragon is aboss enemy inEarthBound Beginnings encountered inMagicant Underground. However, it is impossible to battle it until at level 25, when it is free to battle at any time, by checking it.It is required to be defeated at some point, as doing so yields thesixth melody. It is depicted as a red, serpent-like creature with a pair of legs and wings, and a tail, but no arms.
The Dragon is a tough enemy as it can use powerful physical attacks that can fell low-level party members, as well as a crying attack that lowers the defense of one party member. As far as PSI goes, it can usePK Thunder γ, dealing approximately 50 HP of lightning damage to the entire party, andPK Fire β, which cuts about 70 HP from all party members.
Due to the Dragon's attack patterns,PSI-Block andDefenseUp β work very well in the battle. PSI-Block permanently prevents the Dragon from using its area-of-effect PSI, while raising the party's defense softens the impact of its melee attacks. The player can also usePK Freeze γ to reduce its HP to single digits; this can be followed up with any attack for a quick victory.
The Dragon is reminiscent of the Green Dragon (called just "Dragon" in the Japanese version) fromDragon Quest in the sense that both appear in caves that the player must traverse to continue the adventure, but are likely severely underleveled for the fight the first time they do so. In both cases, the player will not meet the condition to fight the beast at first - inEarthbound Beginnings' case however, the Dragon will also not fight the party until a certain level is reached, reducing the chance of the player's party being obliterated, contrary to its kin series.
