— Cop

TheCop is an enemy and mini-boss inEarthBound. They are smiling policemen in black uniforms with their caps over their eyes, and appear to be performing a karate chop. They are first battled after Ness returns fromGiant Step and goes to theOnett Police Station, where four of them are fought sequentially before engagingCaptain Strong. Later on, they appear inTwoson as random encounters on the field, distinguishable from non-hostile NPCs by their blue-colored skin. While they have no special abilities in battle, they can deal high amounts of damage to Ness at a low level.

During the encounter in the Onett Police Station, the fifth Cop intended to fight Ness will instead flee. While each Cop is fought separately, the player is unable to act between all five battles, including Captain Strong. In Twoson, they are encountered alongside twoRunaway Dogs. When defeated, they go back to normal; during battle, the "Battle Against a Weak Opponent" track plays in the background.

EarthBound Player's Guide description

"Before you head out of town, you'll have a showdown with five of Onett's finest. Before you set foot in the police station, be sure to stock up on supplies."

Trivia

  • In the police station, a cop is playing EarthBound, the game that the player is playing at that time.
  • The Cop was mistaken for theCrooked Cop in the EarthBound Player's Guide.[1]
  • The Cop is the only enemy that has two different overworld sprites: in the scripted Police Station encounter, they look like other NPCs with human skin; in Twoson they are blue-skinned under the influence ofGiygas.
