Claus is a major character appearing inMother 3. He is a boy living inTazmily Village with his twin brother, the main protagonistLucas; as well as their parents,Flint andHinawa.
Biography
Due to being Lucas's twin brother, Claus's appearance is very similar. He wears a cyan and yellow striped t-shirt, orange shorts, and blue shoes. He also has black eyes with pink blushes on his cheeks. His hair is orange and curves upward in a similar style to Lucas's, but towards the right rather than Lucas's left.
Claus is the older twin brother. He lives in the southern portion ofTazmily Village with his brother Lucas, his fatherFlint, his motherHinawa and their dogBoney. Like Lucas, hisfavorite food is Omelets.
Personality wise, Claus is hyperactive, outgoing, and very talkative, contrasting Lucas's more quiet, self-reserved personality. He loves to play, especially with his brother Lucas. Claus is constantly active, always rushing and running to places such as when his mother Hinawa calls the twins over for lunch in the prologue, where he is the first to rush off toAlec'shouse for lunch. He is occasionally described as mischievous among some of the villagers and a minor troublemaker. Claus is also more courageous than Lucas, however he is also impulsive as he rushed to fight theDrago that killed his mother to avenge her without considering the dangers. He still, however, cares deeply about his family, and was the first to arrive at Hinawa's grave.
InMother 3
Claus first appears in theprologue, visiting hisgrandfather atMt. Oriander. He loves playing with theDrago family, and spent most of his time on his visit playing outside and exploring. InChapter 1, however, he's yet to return home from his visit because theforest ends up on fire, and there are many dangerous animals agitated. Hismother is killed by one of thesereconstructed animals, theMecha-Drago, and seeks revenge after being found and rescued by the Tazmily townsfolk.
He tells onlyLucas about his plan to take revenge against the Mecha-Drago for killing his mother, and steals hisfather's homemade knife to fight it. When Flint is put in jail for injuring a few of the villagers, Claus lets him out by concealing a nail file in an apple for him to break the lock with. Claus then heads off to the mountains, meeting theMagypsies on the way there and learning of his psychic abilities. He finds the Mecha-Drago, and gets at least severely injured in the fight. He then went missing, and none of the townsfolk know of what happened to him. Flint spends the next three years searching for him in the mountains, to no avail.
It is later revealed that while he was missing for three years, he was taken in by thePigmasks at some point and was brainwashed and reconstructed. He became theMasked Man, commander of the army, and wasPorky's loyal "robot". Porky then uses him to pull theSeven Needles, a crucial part in his plan to destroy the world. During a long battle withhis brother, fighting over the final Needle, the ghost ofHinawa appears. She urges him to stop fighting, and reminds him that he's not Porky's robot, but Claus, her son. He finally recalls his former identity, and commits suicide to join his mother in the afterlife.
InEarthBound 64
Claus was not featured much in promotional material forEarthBound 64 likely due to the nature of his role containing heavy spoilers. Despite this, he was shown in a few pieces of promotional material, such as the cutscene of himself and Lucas riding through a minecart up in the mountains. In the March 1998 issue of 64 Dream, Claus is described as having an "opposite personality" to Lucas, and that "he likes state of the art technology, which is the opposite of nature…"[2]
In theSuper Smash Bros. series
One ofLucas'salternate costumes starting with his introduction inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl changes his color scheme to resemble Claus, where his hair changes to orange and the color scheme of his clothes changes to match Claus's.
Claus himself has asticker inBrawl which increases Lucas andNess's PSI attack power by 13. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Claus has a neutral typeSpirit. In his Spirit Battle, he is represented by the aforementioned orange Lucas and a gray metal Lucas with aBeam Sword, the latter of which represents when he was brainwashed into becoming the Masked Man. The Masked Man himself additionally has a Spirit of his own, which is an attack Spirit who starts the player off with a Beam Sword and increases the power of sword-based attacks.

- Claus and Lucas' names are anagrams of each other.
- In a May 2000 interview published byThe 64 Dream, Shigesato Itoi mentions bothLucas and Claus are named after the twins from the novel calledLe Grand Cahier byÁgota Kristóf.[3]
