I bring experience in health policy, public education and community engagement to the Missouri House with a professional career in nonprofit communications and public policy in the bistate Kansas City region. I currently serve as a policy advisor at a regional health philanthropy, where I collaborate with community organizations to advance state policies focused on access to health coverage and care. I also have a personal commitment to strengthening public education, having served 7 years on the Kansas City School Board. I have lived in Kansas City for more than 30 years and raised a family here. These experiences, combined with a desire to see the Kansas City region thrive, position me to work productively to improve the health and economic condition of people in our communities.
  • Health care access is core to child well-being, a productive workforce and strong economy. I will work to expand mental health services and effectively implement Medicaid and other child health and family support programs.
  • Public schools are the bedrock of a thriving community. Public education is how we prepare children to be citizens and contributors to the economy and the civic health of our neighborhoods and communities. As a former public school board member, I will pursue opportunities to expand early childhood education and increase resources for teachers and public schools.
  • Missourians want a stronger voice regarding policies that address their health and economic conditions. I will press for fiscal policies and state programs that help families achieve self-suffiency, maintain their rights to privacy in their health care decisions, and prioritize the well-being of children.
I'm committed to removing barriers to health care access; policies that adequately resource public schools and educators; maternal health and the rights of women to make health care decisions; and economic policies that value the contributions of all Missourians.
I bring work experience and public service experience built on discourse, collaboration and problem-solving. I grew up in Missouri and have raised a family here, and want to see my home state rise to the top of rankings for child and family well-being, diverse economic strength, and quality of life. Being a listener, collaborator and learner are qualities that support better policy-making.
I believe the core responsibilities of an elected office holder are to direct the state's resources toward strengthening the lives of its residents; be responsive to citizens and establish opportunities for engagement; work collaboratively with elected colleagues, regardless of party affiliation and perspective; and be proactive in addressing discriminatory state policies and practices that target and exclude groups of people.
Missouri needs to develop strategies to grow its workforce to meet future needs across all industries and sectors. That requires expanding support for public schools, establishing resources for startup businesses, acknowledging the importance immigrants and other newcomers to our economy; and establishing reasonable tax policies that support working families, provide relief to older Missourians, and enhance business enterprise.
I believe it's important for legislators to set an example of the value of civil discourse and discussion for people in the state. Many Missourians believe dialogue isn't possible in political environments, but it's necessary if leaders want to accomplish legislation that strengthens the entire state.
Health, K-12 Education and Budget
Government transparency is central to a healthy democracy and improves government operations and effectiveness. State leaders have a responsibility to stand firmly for financial transparency as a safeguard against ethical lapses, ineffective use of state resources, and practices that advantage some people and groups over others.

Accreditation

As a Kansas City Public Schools parent and taxpayer, I believe full accreditation is an important and urgent goal. Accreditation serves as a signal of educational quality and competence. It tells the community that the basic educational needs of students are being met

Teacher Quality

Teacher quality has a tremendous influence on student achievement. The success of the Kansas City Public Schools is closely tied to the district's ability to attract and retain teachers who bring content knowledge, instructional skills and passion to the classroom.

Parent Involvement

As a district parent, I've seen what parents can contribute to our schools. The Kansas City Public Schools must continue to find ways to connect with families, and listen to their suggestions and concerns. Families today want to have a role in creating good schools.

Community Involvement

Kansas City residents want to see our public schools succeed. I believe there are a multitude of ways that the schools and community members can work together to provide educational and career development opportunities for students and educators. The district can do more to rebuild partnerships.

Scorecards

Ascorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
