SURRENDERS
New Policy's

LONDON, March 8 (A.A.P.).
- A high-ranking Mau Mau
leader, "General Tanganyika,"
has surrendered to the author-
ities in Kenya.
An official announcement in Nairobi
yesterday said this was the first surrender
resulting from the appeal by captured
"General China" to the other terrorist
leaders asking them to give themselves
,up.
WEEDING OUT LEADERS
"General China" wrote
to 26 terrorist leaders over
the last three weeks setting
out the Government's offers
to discuss surrender terms
at a forest peace parley.
Unofficially it is stated that
10 leaders have replied fav-
ourably to "General China s
letter.
RUTHLESS GANGSTER
"General Tanganyika" com-
manded one of "General
China's" Mau Mau battalions
in the Mount Kenya region
and was one of the most ruth-
less gangsters in the area.
His real name is Minoki
Kamotho. '
It is believed now that only
one of "General China's" four
battalion leaders in the Mt.
Kenya area is still operating.
' Security forces killed
"General Bax," commander of
the notorious "Hika Hika'
battalion earlier this year.
"General Gachumu," head of!
another battalion, was trapped
and killed last week.
The remaining commander
heads the "Kaliba" battalion.
A communique issued yes-
terday from the Headquarters
of the British Commander-m
Chief in East Africa, General
Sir George Erskine, said
special branch officers mel
'Tanganyika's" representative
by arrangement in South
Nyeri reserve on Saturday
morning.
The representative said
"Tanganyika" intended to
surrender himself to make a
personal gesture in aid of
"General China's" surrender
project.
This intention was con-
firmed by a letter to "General
China" subsequently received
yesterday.
A Kikuyu guard took "Tan-
ganyika" into custody near
Kangocho, South Nyeri re-1
serve, on Friday evening.
The communique added:
"On arrival at Karatina police
station, about 20 miles south
ef Nyeri, he informed the in-
spector of police he had come
in connection with the sur-
render proposals. He was
placed in detention."
It was also announced yes-1
terday that police wounded
and captured another Mau
Mau leader, "General Ka-
tanga," in the Mount Kenya]
region this week-end.
With him was another well
known terrorist, Nyaga Kir
ingj, who was treating "Kat-|
anga" for gunshot wounds
received in a clash with
security forces three days]
before.
A terrorist captured to-day
by Home Guards, 12 miles
north of Nakuru, north-west
of Nairobi, claimed to be a
Mau Mau leader named
"General Kombu."
COMMUNAL FINE
The Government last night
announced that a communal
fine of £1 a head had been
imposed on the 10,000 adult
inhabitants of Kangema
known or suspected to have
¡consistently harboured Mau
Mau gangs or failed to report
their presence.
It added that it is consider-
ing other punitive measures
against "non:co-operators" in
the area.
[The Governor of Kenya,
Sir Evelyn Baring, announced
on Wednesday that he had
commuted the death sentence
on "General China" to life
imprisonment. He and Gen-
eral Erskine had decided to
use "General China" to sound
out terrorist leaders on their
possible surrender. European
members of the Legislative
Council later protested that
the decision was not in the
long-term interests of the
country. "General China,"
whose real name is Waruhiu
Itote, was wounded and cap-
tured on January 15 and
sentenced to death on Febru-
ary 3.]
More than 40 Mau Mau
terrorists were killed in run-
ning battles with Kenya
Security forces to-day in the
Thika Kijabe and Kiambu
areas, all a few miles north
of Nairobi.
Ten of the men killed were
members of a gang which
ambushed'and killed a British
district officer, 33-year-old
John H. Candler, at Kangema
in the Fort Hall reserve on
Friday night.
Official casualty figures
issued to-day show that 85
Mau Mau were killed and 53
captured last week.
