Unity 8 And Ubuntu Touch Aren’t Going Away Completely, UBports Team Will Keep Them Alive

Short Bytes: On Wednesday, Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth said that the company would discontinue the development of Ubuntu Touch and Unity 8. Marius Gripsgård of the UBports community has stepped forward to take the development command of Ubuntu Touch and Unity 8. The UBports community has ported Ubuntu Touch to different smartphones.

The UBports community primarily focuses on porting the Ubuntu Touch – a mobile operating system developed by Canonical – to various smartphones and tablets.

The team hasmanaged to put Ubuntu Touch devices on Nexus 5, Fairphone 2, OnePlus One. They were working on other devices including OnePlus 3, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, etc. but the news about Ubuntu Touch spilled water on their plans.

First spotted bySoftpedia, the founder of the UBports group Marius Gripsgård posted on hisGoogle+ profile that he would make efforts to continue the development of Unity 8 and Ubuntu Touch.

“I’m not giving up! I will do my best to keep Ubuntu touch and Unity8 standing on both it’s legs! It will be hard. The Ubuntu touch wheel is still spinning, and it has enough momentum to spin until we start spinning it with hopefully with greater force. Expect some news and idea drafts from the UBports team in the coming weeks.,” Gripsgård wrote in the post.
