Fans received their first glimpse at Ryan Gosling's take on Ken in Margot Robbie's upcomingBarbiemovie.
The image, which was posted to Twitter by Warner Bros., features Gosling in a denim vest and jeans, leaning against a bright pink pillar. Sporting a shock of blonde hair, the actor's torso and underwear, which feature the name of his character, are also exposed. Details on Ken's character and his role in the live-action adaptation of theBarbiefranchise remain scarce but fans presume he'll play a key part in the movie's narrative.

Gosling was originally cast inBarbiein October 2021 and was thestudio's first choice to play Ken. TheBlade Runner 2049staroriginally turned down the role due to scheduled conflicts but Warner Bros. reportedly insisted that he feature in the movie. Gosling eventually boarded the production when he eventually had the time to commit to the film.
Little is currently known aboutBarbiebeyond its cast, which is led by Robbie who is starring as the titular character. With Gosling as Ken, the film will also featureShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsstar Simu Liu as well as Will Ferrel, Issa Rae, Hari Nef and Ncuti Gatwa.

Speaking about her intention behindBarbie, Robbie, who also serves as one of the movie's producers, explains that she wantsthe project to subvert audiences' expectations. "Something likeBarbiewhere the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you're thinking, we're going to give you something totally different -- the thing you didn't know you wanted,'" Robbie explained.
Robbie also broke down thetrouble with adapting theBarbiefranchise, a line of toys that has long been criticized for promoting unrealistic body image standards for young children, especially girls. "Right, it comes with a lot of baggage!” Robbie said. "And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hearBarbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t...’” Gerwig also directedLady BirdandLittle Women(2019).
Barbieparties its way into theaters on July 21, 2023.
