Key features

Looker platform features

LookML: Looker’s modeling language

Looker’s secret sauce isLookML, a powerful SQL-based modeling language. Analysts can use LookML to centrally define and manage business rules and definitions in oneGit, version-controlled data model. LookML uses the information in the model to create efficient SQL queries on behalf of users. The model can remove technical skills as a potential barrier and frees up the data team to focus on innovation.

Embedded analytics

Looker’s platform for embedded analytics makes it possible for data analysts, product managers, and developers to rapidly create custom applications and embed analytics in existing applications, websites, and portals. By embedding analytics, you can give users the insights they need within their workflows, including branded, external-facing data discovery environments for partners and customers.

Data visualizations, dashboards, and components

Looker’s interactive and dynamicdashboards and components enable real-time data experiences governed by one trusted and unified data model. Users can choose from a library of visualizations or build their own to tell a unique story. They also have the flexibility to set up filters, set alerts to flag changes and irregularities, drill-in and ask more questions of the data, and integrate actionable insights.

Looker API

TheLooker API can provide a secure, “RESTful” application programming interface for customizing your Looker platform and for calling data. Using the Looker API, you can create custom applications and data-driven workflows, or write scripts that automate tasks such as provisioning new Looker accounts, running queries, scheduling reports, or embedding trusted insights into other systems and applications.

Learn more about Looker Blocks and other Looker features

Looker Blocks and ActionsLooker Blocks andActions are prebuilt pieces of code that can accelerate the development of analytics, insights, workflows, and apps. Looker Blocks include optimized SQL patterns, data source connections, pre-modeled external data, customized analytics, interactive visualizations, and embedding capabilities. Actions can add capabilities from third-party tools—such as Slack and Marketo—to Looker.
Looker extension frameworkLooker extension framework is a fully hosted development platform that enables developers to build a data-powered application, workflow, or tool right in Looker, that can eliminate the need to spin up and host infrastructure. The extension framework can save developers time by taking care of some steps in building web applications including authentication, access control, and API access.
Looker alertsLooker alerts are configurable actions that can automatically check specific data at specific time frequencies. If the data meets the conditions that the administrator or authorized user specifies—including a specific value, percent of change, or time value—Looker can automatically send an alert via email or Slack notification to named individuals.
Looker securityLooker security provides authentication, access controls, and data governance capabilities that can help with GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance. AES 256-bit encryption helps secure database connection credentials and cached data stored at rest. TLS 1.2 can encrypt network traffic between users’ browsers and Looker. Administrators can control data access to databases, rows and/or columns.
Looker componentsComponentsare pieces of Looker user interface code that developers can use to create intuitive applications and extensions.Filter components enable developers to include Looker filter controls—such as sliders, tag lists, and radio buttons—in applications and embedded dashboards. Components can decrease application maintenance and overhead, simplify development, and enhance data experiences.
Looker mobile appLooker’s nativemobile app for iOS and Android can give content consumers on-the-go access to their data in any one of 22 possible languages. Share your content with others and transition between your desktop and mobile device when viewing emails and chats. Log in options include QR code access and biometric authentication to help with security.
Persistent derived tables (PDTs) and incremental PDTsStandardPDTsare tables that Looker writes to the scratch schema of a database that can intelligently query the smallest possible dataset. Doing so can reduce database load and speeds query performance.Incremental PDTs are useful for large data sets. They allow data teams to append fresh data to the PDT without triggering a table rebuild. PDTs are foundational for Looker’saggregate awareness
Looker multicloud supportLooker multicloud support facilitates data experiences. Run Looker natively on Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), andGoogle Cloud Platform. Connect Looker to data in your cloud(s) including on-premises systems, Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud Platform.
