Germany beat England in Under-17 World Cup quarter-final

England were knocked out of the Under-17 World Cup by Germany, despite a late fightback in Mexico.

John Peacock's side went 3-0 down early in the second half of their quarter-final at Estadio Morelos on Monday.

However, a Sam Magri penalty and Hallam Hope goal put them back in the contest, with six minutes remaining.

But England could not find an equaliser and, as with Fabio Capello's senior side in South Africa last year, it was Germany who advanced at their expense.

Germany, who have scored 18 goals in their five games so far in Mexico, were favourites going into the match, which was played on the 21st anniversary of West Germany's penalty shoot-out win over England in the 1990 World Cup semi-finals.

And it was Steffen Freund's side who started the brighter and opened the scoring when Samed Yesil raced on to a long ball, which the England defence failed to deal with, and fired past Jordan Pickford in the seventh minute.

Kaan Ayhan doubled the lead in the 24th minute before Yesil struck again as he tapped in Mitchell Weiser's low ball nine minutes into the second half.

England pulled a goal back in the 67th minute when Portsmouth defender Magri scored from the spot after Nicholas Powell had been brought down in the box.

Everton forward Hope reduced the deficit further in the 84th minute but, despite late pressure, England could not find an equaliser.

Germany move on to play hosts Mexico in their semi-final on Thursday in Torreon.
