Chelsea 2-3 Man City

By Ben SmithBBC Sport at Villa Park

Last updated on.From the sectionFootballcomments233

Samir Nasri

Manchester City signalled their intent for the new season as they held off 10-man Chelsea to lift the Community Shield at Villa Park.

Three goals in 12 second-half minutes by Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri ensured the Premier League champions came from a goal down to win the season's traditional curtain-raiser in a thrilling game.

Fernando Torres had given Chelsea the lead shortly before half-time only for Roberto Di Matteo's side to lose the initiative when Branislav Ivanovic was sent off for a rash tackle on Aleksandar Kolarov moments later.

City send message to rivals

Ben SmithBBC Sport

"This was the day Manchester City sent a message to the rest of the Premier League, a clear signal that the title is very much theirs to give away"

Ryan Bertrand gave Chelsea hope with 10 minutes remaining but City clung on to lift their second trophy of 2012.

This was a rollocking introduction to the next 10 months of drama, disaster, heartache and bluster - a game packed with perspiration and a period of inspiration from City.

The champions were the better throughout, although the dismissal of Ivanovic ultimately shaped the outcome of the game.

For a 10-minute period in the second half, City's attacking play was rapier sharp, their finishing ruthless. Roberto Mancini's men performed with unshakeable belief and eventually found a finishing touch to inflict defeat on a Chelsea team bolstered again by owner Roman Abramovich's millions.

It was not all bad news for Chelsea. Throughout there were signs that Torres was coming to the boil just in time for the new season. Eden Hazard endured an afternoon to forget, tripping over the ball as he attempted a backheel much to the delight of the City fans, but Ramires and Juan Mata provided flair and boundless energy.

Manchester City's long wait

  • Manchester City last lifted this trophy (at the time the Charity Shield) in 1972, despite not winning the league or FA Cup the previous season
  • League champions Derby County and FA Cup winners Leeds United declined to take part so City, who had finished fourth in the First Division, and Third Division champions Aston Villa, were invited to fulfil the fixture, which City won 1-0

But the force was with City, as Mancini's men demonstrated a growing togetherness and maturity.

The swathes of empty seats in all four stands were a reminder that football is, at least for another 24 hours, very much taking second-billing in the national sporting consciousness to the London Olympics. But there was no questioning the commitment of the players.

From the off the challenges were robust and full-blooded, as if a summer of pent-up frustration had been released in 20 thunderous opening minutes. City settled the quicker, with Mancini's decision to experiment with three at the back giving the champions a measure of control in midfield.

Aguero was a constant danger, his runs as sharp and dangerous as they had been inthe dying moments of last season, while Nasri probed menacingly.

City might have taken an early lead with Vincent Kompany, Tevez and Sergio Aguero all going close.

But for all City's dominance, Chelsea stood firm to deliver the ultimate sucker punch with five minutes of the first half remaining.

Ashley Cole's hopeful ball should have been dealt with more decisively, but Ramires picked up the pieces 16 yards from goal, jinked beyond Pablo Zabaleta and rolled a clever pass to his right, where Torres was on hand to apply the kind of calm finish that appeared beyond him for much of last season.

But just as they had established a foothold in the game, Chelsea allowed it to slip away.

Analysis

Former Scotland international Pat NevinBBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"When Chelsea went down to 10 men, the quality Manchester City had on show with Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, and the firepower that came on in David Silva, it was always going to be a long road for Chelsea. With the likes of Aguero, a fit Tevez, Silva and Yaya Toure, City have enough to waltz through the league. The question is can they do the same in Europe?"

As Kolarov broke down the left, Ivanovic moved quickly to his right, launching himself at the City player with studs showing. Referee Kevin Friend immediately produced the red card, sparking fury among the Chelsea staff.

There was no time to pause for breath, however, as City came roaring back. First Yaya Toure beat Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech with a fizzing low shot through a crowded penalty area, before Tevez placed a curling effort into the top corner.

Nasri appeared to kill the game off as he stretched out a boot to poke home Kolarov's pin-point cut-back, but Chelsea kept coming.

Showing the spirit built onlast season's Champions League triumph, they battled back. A speculative shot by Daniel Sturridge was inexplicably spilled by City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon and substitute Bertrand reacted first to prod in the rebound.

Aguero could have put the contest beyond doubt as the match slipped into injury time but on this occasion he could not provide any last-minute drama.

After great displays by the Olympians (except the footballers) over summer I really don't think I will bother with football this season and see if I miss it. Doubt I will.

Not really interested in football after the Olympics.

Bunch of over paid, lower class citizens who have to swear, threaten and feign injury because they have a combined IQ of about 44.

2 soul-less clubs that epitomise everything that is wrong with football opening up another season of moaning, disgrace on and off the field, cheating, diving, fouling, swearing and violence. Can we just have 9 months of Olympics instead?

Who do you lot think the money SHOULD go to? There's a minimum of £30m per team in the league for TV revenue, plus millions in commercial revenue, millions in gate receipts, millions in prize money (for some), millions in sponsorship, etc.

Perhaps we should be paying the players (who play the football) normal wages and give millions to the likes of the Glaziers and Mike Ashley instead?

A lot of pundits wrote City off last year when United came from behind to win in the Community Shield. It's folly to base predictions on a one off showpiece event.

No complaints about the sending off.Defence was dodgy at times but result wasnt as bad as expected.Thought was going to end up being a 6-1 loss so 3-2 in the end..not so bad.Work to be done though

Attendence not that great but seeing as both clubs got around 13,000 each. Not really surprised

What is it with everyone trying to convince me to stop watching football and to stop supporting my club?

I don't care how overpaid footballers are compared to the Olympians and I don't care how much money Roman Abramovich pours into Chelsea.

I love football and I love Chelsea and I'm looking forward to the new season regardless of what any of you write!

Sorry but what has the Olympics got to do with the community shield?

Olympics were fantastic.... Football is great too...

As for this game... As a villa fan it's good to see our pitch looking nice lol... Also I'm a bit indecisive about my fantasy footie team now... Should I drop aguero for tevez? Silva for nasri? Does Torres deserve a go?

    Tips anyone?

Re :- 14.redwillow :-Att 36394 just goes to show you can buy a title but not fans.
Actually, att: 36,394 just goes to show that, with only 13,000 tickets made available to each club, you can buy tickets that are available but not unavailable!! Know your facts first, sunshine!! It saves you from looking a complete idiot!! Oops, too late!!

The Chelsea Manager (Lampard) commented via Di Matteo that his side lost because they were reduced to ten men. I thought it was because Ivanovic made a clumsy challenge and was sent off? Oh well, you live and learn.

Do Chelsea have any other chants than "CHELSEA", "TORRES" and that abusive word to the referee at half time? The fans are as plastic as the club, would be supporting City now if it wasn't for the Champions League.
  • Comment posted by TurnItOffThenBackOnAgain, at 16:28 12 Aug 2012

It's a very flattering scoreline for Chelsea. If Man City had Lescott and Hart back then Chelsea probably wouldn't have scored two.

Lampard and Mikel were far too slow, Chelsea fans best hope Oscar can breathe life in to a poor Chelsea midfield.

Chelsea can take some positives from this game such as Torres looking more up for it than usual, but all that has proven today is that Man City will take some beating. The partnership of Aguero and Tevez looks outstanding, Milner brought a lot of width to the game and looked impressive, Toure and Kompany looking as consistent as ever and Kolorov and Zabeleta giving them a new option.

@ 109 please stop watching Premier League football if you don't like it rather than parading your sanctimony on a football blog.

    Thanks.

    #54 My thoughts entirely!!

These pampered, arrogant footballers need a reality check. After watching the British Olympians act with such grace and humility in the last few weeks, I can't help but feel it's time to turn the clock back, and make football about the game rather than the money.

A cap on wages and spending is needed if football is prevented from financially spiralling out of control.

Man City deserved to win. Disappointed with the red card which ultimately led to the game being pretty much one-sided throughout the second-half, but it was the right call. And for all those abusing Football just because we have had a good Olympics (comparing the good of Olympics to only the bad of football) the novelty will wear off and the greatest sport on earth will again be in the spotlight.

I am a Nigeria but I will say the fact. A player like Mikel has nothing to offer Chelsea in my opinion. Too sluggish, no skill what so ever. Disapointing. He should learn from Yaya Tourie at least they play the same position.

I'm a Man Utd fan - Hate to say it but Carlos Tevez will be awesome this season.

He's come back from the summer at least a stone lighter and much fitter.

When Tevez is fit, he's up there with the best players in the world.

Gutted City have a player like him.

With the lottery money going to Team GB, it meant they could win more medals than before as they could significently invest. This has been seen as an outstanding succcess.

With the money from Sheikh Mansoor going to City, it meant they could win more honours than before as they could significently invest. This has been seen as disgusting.
