OUR reader» are aware that an enquiry has been
pending- far some'timer past,-'before Captain»
Innes and Brown, the Water-Police -Magistrates,
as to the death of a. Native "Chief of the_ -Island
of Rotumah, who, it was" áttege'd;Tiad been shot
by some persons belonging either',to the brig
Por («II ta, or the schooner Velocity,.on-an ex-
pedition tor the purpose of procuring natives of
the South Sea islands as labourers for Messrs.
Boyd and Co. .
'. It appears; that in consequence of a represen-
tation made to the Governor of New Zealand by
tho Rev.--,Mr. Lawrie, Superintendent of the
Wesléyan.-Missions in the South Seas,- Governor
Grey dispatched H.M. Ship Dido to Rotumah,
for'the purpose of instituting the necessary en-
quiries into '-the circumstances of the alleged
outrage.^On ' receipt of Captain Maxwell's re-
port, theirTewZealand Government offered a're-
ward of £200 for such information as would -
lead to the discovery of the perpetrators of the
supposed'murder, and a despatch having been
received by the Government of Sydney, imme-
diate measures were taken to carry out the en- '
quiry. Tile examination took place in private)
and therefore, we are not in a situation to place
before our readers a detailed account of the facts
as elicited in evidence ; but we learn that Cap- -
tain Kirsbpp, formerly of the Velocity, and now
of the steamer Juno, upon bearing' that an in-
vestigation was about to take place, immediately
placed himself in connection with the pieper au-
thorities, and tendered such an explanation of
the circumstances which led to the death of the
Rotumah Chief, (which we believe were fully
borne out by evidence) that himself and crew
are entirely exculpated from all blame in th» '
transaction.
