FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

"Red is the color of emergency. (RED) uses the force of consumerism to defend the world's most vulnerable. That's it. It’s that simple." – Bono

What is (RED)?

(RED) was founded in 2006 by Bono and Bobby Shriver to engage businesses and people in the fight to end AIDS. (RED) partners with the world’s most iconic brands to develop (RED)-branded products, experiences, and services that, when purchased, trigger contributions to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. These contributions are then invested in HIV/AIDS programs in sub-Saharan Africa.

Why was (RED) created?

(RED) was designed to kick-start a sustainable flow of private sector money into the Global Fund. Before the creation of (RED), businesses had contributed just $5 million to the Global Fund, which put the Global Fund’s charter under threat.  Since launching in 2006, (RED) has generated $650 million to fight AIDS - more than any other business initiative among Global Fund donors.

What is the Global Fund, and how does it partner with (RED)?

The Global Fund is a partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector, and people affected by AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria designed to accelerate the end of these three diseases as epidemics. The Global Fund mobilizes and invests more than $4 billion a year to support programs run by local experts in communities that are most impacted. It’s one of the most effective organizations fighting these diseases and is responsible for about 1/5th of all HIV/AIDS funding worldwide.

To date, (RED) has generated $650 million for the Global Fund to support HIV/AIDS grants in Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, eSwatini, Tanzania, and Zambia. 100% of that money goes to work on the ground—no overhead is taken.

(RED)-supported Global Fund grants have impacted 180 million people through HIV prevention, treatment, counseling, education, testing, and care services. All programs are reviewed and measured for success to ensure maximum impact.

Is AIDS still a global epidemic?

Absolutely. Though new infections have declined significantly over the last two decades, there are still 38 million people living with HIV. AIDS kills more young people aged 15-29 than any other disease worldwide and is the leading cause of death among young women aged 15-49 years old. Last year alone, 770,000 people died of AIDS-related illnesses.

Why does (RED) focus on countries in sub-Saharan Africa?

Of the 38 million people living with HIV globally, two-thirds live in sub-Saharan Africa. Every day, 400 babies are born with HIV and 21 countries in Africa account for roughly 90% of all new pediatric infections.

Ending mother-to-child transmission is a crucial piece of ending AIDS as an epidemic by 2030. (RED) focuses specifically on programs in Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, eSwatini, Tanzania, and Zambia—8 countries with high rates of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Today, antiretroviral medication exists that can prevent mothers from passing the virus to their babies. With the advent of lifesaving ARVs, a historical opportunity is upon us... what global health leaders are calling ‘the beginning of the end of AIDS.’ By supporting programs that provide pregnant mothers with HIV testing, life-saving medication, infant feeding guidance, and other services, (RED) funds are helping to ensure that more babies are born HIV-free, bringing us closer to ending AIDS once and for all.

Does (RED) profit from the sale of (RED)-branded partner products and services?

No. 100% of (RED) money from partner products, services and experiences goes to work on the ground—no overhead is taken.

Is (RED) a 501(c)(3)?

Yes, (RED) is a 501(c)(3). (RED) is a division of The ONE Campaign, a 501(c)(3) organization.

How are (RED) and ONE Related?

(RED) is a division of The ONE Campaign, a global movement to end extreme poverty and preventable disease by 2030 so that everyone, everywhere can lead a life of dignity and opportunity. Whether lobbying political leaders in world capitals or running cutting-edge grassroots campaigns, ONE pressures governments to do more to fight extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, and empowers citizens to hold their governments accountable.

While (RED) focuses on raising awareness and contributions for the AIDS fight, ONE advocates the public sector to garner both support and government funding for all three preventable diseases the Global Fund supports: AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. Working in tandem, (RED) and ONE work to achieve their shared goals of economic empowerment and disease prevention.
