Closed Churches

Print PrintEmail Email
During the history of the Diocese, the churches below have been closed. A Parish Council may deem the closure of a church necessary for reasons such as:

  • the congregation may have decreased;
  • the land may have been resumed by a civil authority; or
  • the building may no longer meet the needs of the Parish.

The Parish Council, having made a decision on closure, must hold a public meeting followed by a meeting of parishioners at which the decision is considered. Application is then made to the Archbishop for the closure of the Church and the removal of its dedication. If the closure is approved by the Church authorities, a closing service is usually held in the Church. At this service, the Petition is presented, the Deed of Closure is read and the dedication of the building is formally removed.
