Environmental Policy
Background
IOP Publishing Limited (“IOP”) recognizes its environmental responsibilities and is committed to contributingto the reduction of local, national and global environmental damage. The Directors of IOP have agreed thatIOP should increase its environmental awareness and have drawn up this environmental policy. It sets outthe actions that IOP will take to reduce the environmental impact of its activities and promote environmentalgood practice.
This policy will be subject to change as the business develops and may be influenced by technologicalchanges. It is meant to be the first step in heightening environmental awareness, encouraging staff to assessthe environmental impacts arising from their activities and seeking ways of controlling those impacts.
IOP is committed to:
- conserving energy and giving preference to renewable sources of energy and materials whereverreasonably practicable, as referred to in its Energy Policy (see A below)
- complying with applicable legal requirements and regulations (see B below)
- doing as much as it can to prevent pollution (see C below)
- encouraging all of its staff to improve their awareness of the environment and to become moreenvironmentally responsible (see D below)
- assisting, wherever reasonably practicable, in the development of solutions to environmental problemsin the publishing industry (see E below)
- encouraging its staff to use green methods of transport, wherever possible (see F below)
- maintaining environmental policies, procedures and systems
- improving environmental performance
To achieve this, IOP aims to:
- reduce its use of energy through improvements to energy efficiency and the substitution, whereverreasonably practicable, to renewable energy sources
- review this policy regularly to take into account changes to legislation and best practice
- minimize waste by reducing consumption and pollution and developing effective waste-managementand recycling procedures
- ensure that all staff are given the opportunity to take an active role in implementing and developingenvironmental policy
- work with IOP suppliers to pursue good environmental practice
- provide facilities for cyclists and, in addition, disabled people and encourage greater use by staff oftravel by foot, bicycle and public transport.
To date, IOP has made the following achievements in this regard:
- Water consumption — Regular review of company's consumption to monitor any practical ways ofreducing the same.
- Gas and electricity consumption — Regular review of company's consumption to monitor any practicalways of reducing the same.
- Cardboard recycling — Collection points within company for disposal of cardboard waste.
- Paper recycling — Members of staff given bin specifically for disposal of recyclable paper.
- Cleaning Products — IOP strives to use an increasing amount of environmentally friendly cleaningproducts.
- Staff commitment and involvement — IOP has a designated Environmental Awareness Group (aboutwhich, see below) which meets regularly to discuss various environmentally related issues and ways toraise staff awareness of the same.
- Green transport — IOP actively encourages staff to cycle to work and to use public transport whereverpossible. Parking and changing facilities are provided for cyclists and all staff are offered discountedbus tickets.
- E-mail disclaimer — Disclaimer attached to all outgoing e-mails asks recipient to consider theenvironment when deciding whether to print hard copies of e-mails.
- Carbon offsetting — IOP records details of overseas business flights taken by its staff and makes afinancial donation, based on those figures, to a company that takes steps to limit the potentiallyharmful effects of carbon dioxide emissions on the environment.
Product and service offerings:
- Provision of electronic-only services to view IOP content in the form of IOPscience, which will help tosave paper and other resources used in the production process for printed journals.
- Commitment to continued provision of historic online content, and new ways of providing currentcontent, in electronic format, through initiatives like community websites (including one based onenvironmental science, see environmentalresearchweb.org).
- Reduction in page sizes for a number of IOP journals to make savings where readers prefer to printarticles from the online journal.
- Environmental Awareness Group
- An Environmental Awareness Group (the “Group”) exists to develop environmental initiatives. The Group willissue guidelines on recommended best practice concerning energy conservation, recycling and otherrelevant issues and generally keep the policy under review. It is always pleased to receive suggestions fromstaff.

Energy policy
This policy is implemented in accordance with the requirements of the IOP Environmental Policy.
IOP Publishing Limited (“IOP”) is committed to minimising the impact of its operations on the environment, including its use of energy. IOP's aim is to improve the energy efficiency of its operations in order to reduce costs, emissions of CO2 and minimise its contribution to climate change.
IOP will monitor its energy performance and will do all it reasonably can to optimise its use of energy and reduce the significance of impacts in those areas. These issues will be reviewed regularly to ensure continual improvement.
IOP will continue to raise energy awareness within the company through the development and training of employees and will communicate openly and consult with customers and suppliers on relevant matters.
IOP intends to review all major projects and purchases for their effect on energy consumption and CO2 emissions and, where technically, practically and financially viable, improvements will be made. The use of renewable and sustainable technologies will be specifically considered.
For buildings, the obligations imposed on IOP under the Building Regulations will be taken as a minimum standard and IOP will do all that it reasonably can to surpass these where viable.
