Gandhinagar: The state government on Monday finally announced creation of 23 new talukas. The decision comes close on the heels of the creation of seven new districts.

The government had announced that new talukas would come into existence from Independence Day - August 15. While the new districts formally came into being from the day, opposition at a few places led to delay in announcement of new talukas, which was made on Monday.

As a result of this, the number of talukas in the state has gone up to 248, as against 225 so far. The number of districts had gone up from 26 earlier to 33.

"The creation of new talukas would make administration simpler, accessible and speedier," the state government said in a statement. …
