``TADANTO’’

Story ByGANDHARVA RAJA
(Synopsis of film script)

Abhi and Nisha are growing up in Kolkata and studying in the same college. Abhi is the son of a grocery shop owner. Nisha has a very aristocrat background and belongs to Mullik family. Despite their social difference they have fallen in love with each other.

Years later, a police jeep with Inspector Dasgupta and a junior Constable arrives at Chowdhury residence at Bhadreshwar one night. Dr Dinesh Chowdhury, belonging to a very affluent jute mill owner’s family, has been murdered. Although there were a few members in his family, Dinesh was quite isolated and lived a lonely life. He was temperamentally volatile and arrogant and had a failed marriage.

Mona, an escort girl, was often Dinesh’s companion with whom he shared a turbulent relationship. He often called Mona at his riverside retreat and spent evenings with her. Mona used to look forward to Dinesh’s invitations and secretly nurtured a desire to be with him forever. Her boss Robi, the pimp was very possessive about her and did not at all like Mona’s infatuation for Dinesh. But he could not stop Mona from meeting Dinesh as she used to receive good money from Dinesh. Mona’s love for Dinesh took deep roots but Dinesh, although aware of it, could neither accept her love nor stop meeting her altogether.

Flash back. Nisha’s father Kashinath a resident of Shobha Bazaar, on becoming aware of Nisha’s love affair wants to marry off Nisha. He heads straight for Bhadreshwar to arrange Nisha’s marriage with Dr. Dinesh Chowdhury. Kashinath promises Dinesh his co-operation in all aspects and advises Dinesh to move to some posh locality in Kolkata. Mona and Abhi are shattered when they hear about this. Abhi goes to Kashinath to ask for Nisha’s hand in marriage. But he is turned down. Nisha is eventually married off to Dr Dinesh Chowdhury.

Nisha one day finds out about Dinesh’s earlier escort Mona. That night, Nisha secretly goes out to find Abhi at their home in Howrah. But Abhi with his parents had moved to their native village in Birbhum. After a few years, Abhi and Nisha accidentally meet at a party. Immediately the old chemistry becomes alive. But none speaks of their own marriages.

Mona, after years, receives a telephone call from Dinesh who invites her again to his river side retreat. She is overjoyed and ecstatic. But Robi, her boss and pimp, overhears the conversation and gets very disturbed. He tries to stop Mona from visiting Dinesh, but Mona is determined to visit Dinesh at his river side retreat. She arrives at Dinesh’s retreat but gradually finds out that as before, Dinesh doesn’t care about her feelings at all. He has just invited her for her service.

Back to the murder spot and present time. Police is interrogating the family members of Dr Dinesh Chowdhury but not finding any clue to the murder mystery. Inspector Dasgupta examines the dead body again and again.

After interrogating all the members of Dr Dinesh’s house, police inspector Dasgupta comes to know about the deceased’s unhappy married life. He also comes to know about how desperate Nisha was to get a divorce from Dinesh. As the investigation progresses a lot of clues appears. Eventually Nisha is interrogated by Inspector Dasgupta. Through interrogation he comes to know that Dr Dinesh always carried a gun. But he cannot find it anywhere even after a thorough search.

Further investigation leads the police inspector Mr Dasgupta to Robi and Mona. Through interrogation the Inspector comes to know about the love triangle between Robi and Mona and Dinesh. Inspectot Dasgupta gathers a lot of clues but none of them points to the person who committed the murder. He cannot find any strong evidence to pin down the murderer.

But the persistent police inspector does not give up on the case. He goes on with his investigation with perseverance and after a chain of thrilling incidents, he is able to find the evidence he was looking for. The veil of mystery is finally lifted by Inspector Dasgupta. Dinesh’s missing gun was found and eventually the culprit who committed the murder is brought to light.

About TADANTO

« Director's Note »

Tadonto is a story of burning love, unfulfilled desires and cruel twists in life. Originally written as 'Nisha Trilogy' by writer Gandharva Raja, the story is made consice and adapted for big screen audience by myself and Script writer Debaditya Dutta.
The story revolves around four characters: Abhi, Nisha, Mona and Dinesh. It is set in 1980's Kolkata when life as we see it now was quite different. There was no computers and smart phones, no emails and sms, no Facebook and Twitter. It was a time of Door Darshan and landlines, post cards and 'addas' at tea shops.
The 60s and 70s were riddled with political turbulence and Unemployment, whch affected the society and shaped it's psyche. Socialist and communist ideas flourished in the young minds of college students, which perhaps gave them hope for a better future. Those who weren't actively involved, were also affected, at a subconscious level.
During this time we also saw three wars being fought: Indo-Pakistan, Indo-China and Bangladesh. Ours being a Border state, it was afected quite a lot, especially in the Bangladesh War. The industrial growth in Kolkata had come to a halt due to the political turbulence of the 60's and 70's. The jute industry had dwindled to its death. The stream of refugees from Bangladesh poured in to an economy which was already struggling. This disturbance, frustration and lack of direction gave way to a lot of dark and shady activities – flesh trade being one of them.
The 80's was less turbulent but showed almost no hope. But the damage was already done and signs of recovery was almost invisible. Unemployment was still a malady, which resulted in a frustrated youth force. Owners of jute mills who once had good business were into something else. And those who could not diversify, were left with no occupation at all. Frustrated as they were, they took to drinking. The devil set up its workshop easily in these idle minds. The peace and harmony in their families often shattered to pieces.
The story reminds us about a bygone era which some of us had lived through and which the newer generation has no idea about. I have tried to portray this through the characters in the story. Mona is an educated girl who had chosen to be a call girl. She is very ambitious and hopes that someday she will meet her prince charming and come out of it.
Her prince charming is Dr. Dinesh, from a jute refinery business family who has seen his ancestral business plunge to death. He has a failed marriage and a broken home, and has taken to drinking. Mona is his occasional entertainment and rejuvenation at his riverside retreat.
Abhi and Nisha are young college goers belonging to very contrasting socio-economic backgrounds. But they overcame their mental barriers and deeply fell in love with each other. Their dream was to marry each other and be together for life. But their families, who are quite aware of their respective positions in the society, thought differently. Especially the family of Nisha, who comes from a very affluent family of North Kolkata.
These characters weave a very interesting fabric of the plot in which a murder takes place. Police inspector Dasgupta is assigned to investigate the case. He becomes very involved with the case but as he went deep into it, the truth eluded him more and more. He took the case as a personal challenge and became hell bent in solving it. He is a character who not only uses his brain to solve a case, but if need be, bends a few rules and makes his hands dirty to get to the truth. For me making this film was a journey to a period of time in which I lived in Kolkata. It was a very nostalgic experience for me and a challenge one too. I have thoroughly enjoyed directing this film and I hope the audience will enjoy watching it just as much.
