Taki Rua Productions andHumourbeasts (Jemaine Clement and Taika Cohen) would like toinvite you to experience theatre at its very best. FromOctober 13th to November 6th, Christchurch audiences willhave the opportunity to see the smash production of “TheUntold Tales of Maui”. With the aid of state of the artmulti-media devices, massive back-projections, puppetry andcomputer animated characters, “The Untold Tales of Maui” arebrought back to life through the tales of Nanny, the wizenedkuia who spins fantastical stories for Kapa, our troubledyouth in need of some guidance from the past...
Nanny’sstories take us to a time when the sun raced across the skylike a hoiho hoha (or impatient horse), when people couldtake their jawbones out at will or change into differentanimals, when grandmothers could set things on fire withtheir fingernails, when you could catch fish the size of asmall South Pacific nation. At first, young Kapa has nointerest in these crusty myths, but as Nanny’s incrediblestories gather strength, the young fool is soon drawn intothe mysterious and fantastical world of Maui and his famousexploits.
“The Untold Tales of Maui” premiered in Hamiltonlast November and moved to Whangarei before hitting theAuckland and Wellington stages. With the support of MäoriWomen’s Welfare League, Taki Rua Productions is proud topresent this award winning show to Christchurch audiences. HUMOURBEASTS Taika Cohen Taika Cohen has recently set upa film company with Cliff Curtis Defender Films. His shortfilm Two Cars, One Night, was presented as part of the 2003Wellington International Film Festival and is recently upfor selection for the 2005 Oscars. Taika has been invitedby National geographic to present his film in LA and NewYork later this year. He has just finished filming a shortfilm about the Maori Battalion in the Wellington Hospitalruins. He won the 24 hours film competition in Wellington. His debut film, John & Pogo was screened in the previousWellington International Film Festival. Both films werereceived with much acclaim.
Recent theatre productionsTaika has devised, written for, and performed in includesell-out comedy show Humourbeasts: Humouroids, sell-out STABshow AAAAARGH! The Live Movies” (2000), sell-out show“Little Che” (2001), and sell-out STAB show LIVETRANSMISSIONZ (2002). Taika’s stand up comedy show “Taika’sIncredible Show” sold out at BATS.
JemaineClement
Jemaine Clement is well known to New Zealanders asone-half of the outstanding musical comedy duo Flight of theConchords. Jemaine joins us fresh off the plane from theConchords performance at ‘Her Majesty’s Theatre’ London aspart of THE PERRIER COMEDY AWARD NOMINATION 2003, the UK'sNo1 Award for Comedy.
The Flight of the Conchords werebased in Britain from June - September. With regular gigs atLondon's comedy clubs, the Conchords also hit the Festivalcircuit performing at Glastonbury, The Hague Arts Festivaland Galway Arts Festival among others. Television and radiocontracts are also in the offing. The Conchords have alsobeen invited to perform at Montreal's Laugh Festival wherethey have secured a slot in one of the televised galaperformances - a coup for a first time appearance atMontreal.
Jemaine co-directed AAAAARRRGH: the Live Moviesa sell-out show in 2000 incorporating many multi-mediaaspects that will be used in “Maui”. He co-directedClaymations short film The Pen with his company Fifty Fieldsusing some of the animation techniques that will be used toconvey this mythical tale. Jemaine’s film Tongan Ninja waspresented at this year’s International Film Festival.
