According to original Queen member Brian May, had the English rock band's 1975 album A Night At The Opera not been met with the success it did, Queen more than likely would have disbanded.But that album, which went triple platinum (three million sold) in the U.S. alone, reinvigorated Freddie Mercury et al, who rode the success of the album's singles, You're My Best Friend and Bohemian Rhapsody, well into the next decade and beyond.
On Saturday at Del Crary Park, Festival of Lights attendees will hear every track from A Night At The Opera as they were originally recorded, courtesy of Classic Albums Live. The concert begins at 8 p.m. with fireworks following the show.
Classic Albums Live, based out of Toronto, has performed numerous hit albums in their entirety, including Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and three Led Zeppelin releases. Touring extensively, the band has a group of core members but frequently they're joined by others depending on the album being covered.
* You're My Best Friend was Queen bass player John Deacon's first single. The song was written for his wife.
* The lyrics of I'm In Love With My Car were inspired by one of the Queen's roadies, John Harris, whose Triumph TR4 was evidently the "love of his life." The song is dedicated to him.
* Following his performance of '39 at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, George Michael cited it as his favourite Queen song, claiming he used to busk it on the London Underground.
* The tap dance segment in Seaside Rendezvous was "performed" by Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor tapping on the mixing desk with thimbles on their fingers.
* At more than eight minutes in length, The Prophet's Song is Queen's longest song.
* During the recording of Bohemian Rhapsody, the song became affectionately known as "Fred's thing" to the band with the eventual title only emerged during the final sessions.
* Brian May has stated God Save The Queen is a homage to Jimi Hendrix's version of The Star-Spangled Banner.
