Match Report

Commentary

Four tries in a devastating 18 minute spell either side of half time saw Australia hold off a spirited England on the opening day of the tournament.

England opened the scoring after seven minutes when Australia’s James Tamou was penalised for a high shot. They opted for the kick to touch and from the resulting tap; the ball was moved smartly from right to left which enabled Ryan Hall to go over in the corner. Sinfield missed the conversion to leave the score to leave them 4-0ahead.

It looked as though they had extended their lead soon after George Burgess barged his way over the line but the video referee adjudged that the England player had lost the ball touching down.

However, England four minutes later the video referee was called into action once again when a kick through by Sinfield was not picked up by Australia’s Brett Morris and it allowed Leroy Cudjoe to gather the ball and touch down. Sinfield added the extras to put his side 10-0 ahead.

But after 26 minutes Australia got their first points on the board when Cooper Cronk put up a towering bomb and Greg Inglis beat England’s Sam Tomkins to the ball and then passed the ball back inside for Jonathan Thurston to go over. The stand-off converted his own try to cut the deficit to four points.

As the half was drawing to a close, England conceded successive penalties to give Australia good field position. They made the most of it with Smith and Thurston linking up to put Greg Bird through a gap between two defenders for another try. Thurston added the extras to put Australia 12-10 ahead.

With just seconds of the half remaining they increased their lead when the referee ruled a pass by Sam Burgess pass to be forward. From the resulting scrum the ball was moved smartly to Billy Slater who dummied two defenders before sprinting to the line. Thurston made it 18-10 with the conversion as the teams went in at half time.

Australia were quickest out of the blocks in the second half, Cameron Smith kicking a 40-20 despite a great effort from Josh Charnley to keep the ball in play. From the scrum the ball was passed smartly down the line to enable Brett Morris to go over in the corner to make it 22-10.

England fought their way back into the game after 52 minutes after Australia had conceded back to back penalties. The ball was fed to George Burgess who made no mistake this time when he powered his way over, Sinfield’s conversion reducing the arrears to six points.

Going into the final quarter Australia extended their lead with a penalty from Thurston to make it 24-16 and they effectively killed the game off with another try. England conceded a penalty around the play the ball and Australia took full advantage with some slick handling putting Darius Boyd diving over in the corner.

England set up a tense finish when Josh Charnley snapped up a lose pass from Slater and ran unopposed to the line. Sinfield couldn’t convert and Australia held onto to their 28-20 lead until the final whistle to register the first win of this tournament.

  • 80: In the midst of all the action at the end of the game Jonathon Thurston was named Man of the Match.
  • 80: FULL TIME. A magnificent first game with nine tries scored, Rugby League doesn't get much better than that. England 20-28 Australia.
  • 80: FULL TIME. The hooter blows and it's an opening day win for Australia.
  • 78: Once again apologies from the technical difficulties here in Cardiff. But forget about those, this game has been Rugby League at it's finest.
  • 76: Conversion missed. England 20-28 Australia.
  • 76: Break away try for England.
  • 64: Penalty slotted over from Thurston and that's 4 from 5 for him. Australia move over a converted try clear. England 16-24 Australia.
  • 63: Big hit from Sam Burgess on Sam Thaiday of Australia. The big Aussie number 12 took a few minutes to get to his feet after that one.
  • 62: A quick penalty from England puts them in prime position in front of the Australian posts. Scrum down 5 yards out.
  • 60: We've got our first brawl of the game, Ben Westwood disapproving of a late Australian tackle. The referee ensures the situation doesn't escalate.
  • 58: Australia close to another try. Great build up play from Billy Slater but the Aussies just can't get the ball down. Is this the best Rugby World Cup opener ever?
  • 57: Ben Westwood is tackling like a Trojan out there today. No one seems capable of beating the England number 12.
  • 55: The second half continues in frantic fashion. Australia now have their hands on the ball following great play from Thurston.
  • 53: That try seems to have given England a new found belief as they pressure the Australian's straight from the restart. This game is definitely not decided yet.
  • 51: TRY GIVEN. Could that be England's way back into the match? Kevin Sinfield slots an easy conversion and it's England 16-22 Australia.
  • 51: Goal by Sinfield
  • 50: Try by G. Burgess
  • 47: After a flurry of Australian tries the England backline are once again holding firm. Gutsy display so far from Steve McNamara's men.
  • 47: England just cant get their hands on the ball at the moment. Australia deep inside the England half yet again but Ryan Hall deals with the danger.
  • 45: Thurston just isn't missing them today! He converts Morris's try and that's England 10-22 Australia here in Cardiff.
  • 44: TRY AUSTRALIA. Brett Morris is down in the corner following a swift passing move down the right hand side. England 10-20 Australia.
  • 43: England continue to press in the early stages of the second half. Can they convert the pressure into some points?
  • 41: The second half is under way! Australia kick off but it's well dealt with by England. A long kick down field is only half cleared by the men in green and gold.
  • 40: An impressive start to the half from England but Australia proved the more clinical side as the first 40 minutes progressed. A Billy Slater try on the stroke of half time means Steve McNamara has much to do to motivate his men. England 10-16 Australia.
  • 40: HALF TIME
  • 40: Yet another conversion made by Thurston and that's 3 out of 3 from him. Half time England 10-18 Australia.
