Research

I work at the nexus of political economy and political ecology, particularly where those fields intersect with the emerging discipline of ‘sustainability science’. Committed to interdisciplinarity, I collaborate with natural, social and medical scientists on a range ofresearch projects.

Having conducted research in both the ‘developing’ and ‘developed’ world, I have a strong interest in debates over postcolonialism and development. Most of myfieldwork has taken place in Latin America, Europe, and south-east Asia (over a dozen countries to date).

Current research interests include: urban environmental security; sustainability and eco-politics; the securitization of the environment (particularly at the water-energy-food security nexus); biopolitics; emergent forms of environmental governance, particularly in Latin America.

I have a strong commitment to policy, and regularly makecontributions to policy debates and processes.

Prospective students are very welcome to get in touch. I currently supervise students in Geography and in UBC’s interdisciplinary environmental studies program (RMES) at theInstitute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability.
