ERT: the day after

The sudden shut down of Greece’s public broadcasterERT’s came as a shock to many Greeks in the country and around the world.

But as demonstrations and movements of support for the public TV’s employees got underway in Athens, the Greek goverment announced its “day after” plan for Greek public television.

Goverment spokesman Simos Kedikoglou said the ‘newERT’ will be fully functional by the 29th of August. A proposed government bill has been posted on the internet and will be put to public consultation.

The name of the new company will beNERIT (New Hellenic Radio, Internet and Television).

Kedikoglou also said thatNERIT will have between 1,000 and 1,200 employees, whilst all present staff will be “released and compensated”.

He added that ‘‘employees who have proven their work abilities all those years will be given priority in the recruitment process of the new company”.

Responding to the comments from the parties in the coalition government – Pasok and Dimar – Kedikglou argued that both parties’ leaders – Venizelos and Kouvelis – had been duly informed about the planned shut down ofERT.

The new organisation will continue to get its revenue from a fee collectable through electricity bills, though how much that will be has not yet been revealed.
