GIS

About GIS

The RIDOT Geographical Information Systems Unit is placed in the Management Information Systems (MIS) section of Policy Planning. MIS is responsible for all computer hardware, software, and systems in the Department. The GIS Unit provides cartographic services, geographic data maintenance, and GIS assistance including application development to users. It consists of a GIS Manager and five GIS specialists.

Map Order Form

Printed maps can be requested from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation by filling out theMap Request Form. This form must then be submitted to GIS at the DOT building in Providence. The request form can be read and completed using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Goals & Objectives

  • Integrate GIS within RIDOT's programs, projects and services via Management Information Services.
  • Provide an accurate and stable geographic base to assimilate, integrate and display transportation information for decision making.
  • Provide employees with appropriate GIS based systems and tools to enhance their level of preparedness and performance so they can do the best job possible in the duties they are assigned.
  • Develop appropriate GIS based methods and procedures for assessing the fiscal impact and cost-benefit analysis of transportation systems when considering infrastructure investments and land-use policies.
  • Facilitate public participation and a customer service focus, by utilizing GIS based systems wherever appropriate.

Digital Maps

GIS also offers all of our maps in digital format. They are free to download from theDigital Map Site. These maps are stored in pdf format and can be read using AdobeAcrobat Reader. Some of these files are larger in size, as a result we recomend a high speed connection if possible for downloading them.
