WASHINGTON - As a Depression-era teenager, Robert Byrd courted hisfuture wife with chewing gum and candy acquired from a wealthierschoolmate.

"That's how you court your girl, with another boy's bubble gum,"he said.

Erma Ora James was born June 12, 1917, in Floyd County, Va. Hercoal miner father's work soon took the family to Stotesbury inRaleigh County, where she graduated from Mark Twain High School.

That is where she met her future husband, but she didn't catchRobert Byrd's eye immediately. Instead, Byrd first noticed herfather's fiddle.
