Endowed Chairs are associated with the best universities and colleges around the world. They are elite faculty positions. For the distinguished professors who hold such positions, an endowed chair represents prestige, leadership, and profound responsibility.
When chairs are endowed, funds are raised, restricted and invested in order to generate annual income from which a salary for the distinguished professor is allocated. In the case of the Gordon B. Hinckley Endowment, the interest will also be applied to building a solid academic program noted for its rigorous teaching and scholarship. (Normally, only about five percent of the interest is used for these purposes the rest is returned to principal for reinvestment.)
An Endowed Chair represents an opportunity for the College of Humanities to attract an internationally acclaimed professor who, as a widely respected teacher and scholar, will build one of the very best British Studies programs in the world. The Colleges goal is to make the Gordon B. Hinckley Chair in British Studies one of the most significant chairs at the University of Utah. Such a chair would be worthy of its namesake and of the educational mission of the College of Humanities.
