MANILA, May 21 — On May 21, 1875, Valente Cristobal, a noted Hiligaynon playwright, was born in Polo (now Valenzuela City), Bulacan.
Cristobal was dubbed in his time as the Prince of "Zarzuelistas" for his capacity to draw crowds at performances of his works.
Among the popular "sarsuwelas" he wrote during the American period, "Nating," which was first staged on July 3, 1908, was considered as the best. He also wrote "Ma-Pa-Ta" and "Sa Tiangge ni Takay."
He died on November 1, 1945 at the age of 70. (PNA)
