This collection documents and aggregates information related to the "Occupy Movement" starting in the Autumn of 2011 and continuing in 2012. In September of 2011, a demonstration was held in New York City, calling itself "Occupy Wall Street". This demonstration inspired similar protests and demonstrations around the world calling for social and economic equality, which are collectively now referred to as the "Occupy Movement".

Rochester, NY — Today at about 1:00pm members of Occupy Rochester filed a lawsuit in State Supreme Court against the City of Rochester. The lawsuit asks for the court to enforce the contract between the City and Occupy Rochester and to order the City not to remove the protesters. Members of Occupy Rochester will be available for comment at 5:30 pm at Washington Square Park.

On November 11, 2012 Occupy Rochester entered into an agreement with City of Rochester which protects peaceful encampment’s first amendment rights to protest in Washington Square Park. The contract states that it “shall be renewed” for period of two months upon “substantial compliance.” Rochester, one of the only remaining encampments, has been a model for the nation in maintaining and using a public park as a center of organizing and protest.

No allegations of “non-compliance” have been issued nor have any other concerns been raised by the City of Rochester during our 4 months in Washington Square Park. Occupy Rochester even offered to end the encampment in exchange for a committment for tangible change on several issues of social and economic justice. Despite this, on Friday March 2, 2012 Mayor Tom Richards indicated to members of Occupy Rochester that he would ignore the contract and remove the protest encampment if it remained after March 11, 2012.

Occupy Rochester, in its brief existence, has brought many long-standing issues of social and economic injustice out of the shadows and into the light of public awareness. Issues like, the effects of the housing crisis, chronic homelessness, environmental concerns, corporate welfare have been championed by our broad, diverse movement, just to name a few.

Instead of working with social movements like Occupy Rochester to make Rochester a Human Rights City, Mayor Richards is bent on attacking the messenger and shoving these pressing issues back into the shadows. After fighting to prosecute us in court, only to have the charges dismissed, the city now seeks to waste more valuable time and resources to silence us again, resources that would be better used to address the very issues Occupy Rochester has been fighting for.

As the demonstrators at Occupy Wall St. boldly declared, “You can’t evict and idea whose time has come.” We stand by our constitutional right to protest (deleted) and will continue to fight for the issues that rallied thousands behind the banner of Occupy Wall St. We are the 99%

MAYOR RICHARDS TO MEET WITH OCCUPY ROCHESTER

March 1, 2012
Rochester NY – On Friday March 2, at 10:00 a.m., members of Occupy Rochester will meet with Mayor Richards at City Hall to discuss the renewal of the agreement and Occupy Rochester’s demands for change in the City of Rochester.

March 11 will mark the four month anniversary of Occupation of Washington Square Park and the Agreement signed between Occupy Rochester and the City. March 11 is also when the Agreement is up for a 2 month renewal. Being in substantial compliance with the contract, Occupy Rochester anticipates the renewal of this historic agreement which has been a model for how peaceful encampment protests can work amicably with city governments.

In the past the Mayor has stated he cannot address any of Occupy Rochester’s issues because it is only national in focus. However, in addition to its national agenda for change, Occupy Rochester has brought local demands for change to the last four City Council meetings. Some of these will be discussed with Mayor Richards including a proposal to make Rochester a Human Rights City in compliance with internationally recognized civil and economic human rights.

A press conference is scheduled after the meeting on the steps of City Hall.

ROCHESTER NY STAND UP, FIGHT BACK!

The Occupy movement’s Global Day of Creative  Action is waving its freak flag here in the City of Rochester at the Flying Squirrel Community Space on Sunday, February 12, 2012. Occupy Rochester’s Artivism working group is planning an interactive and informative event in which art, of all shapes and forms, can be shared, expressed and evolved throughout the city of Rochester and within socio-economic movements as they arise.

The festivities will be taking place from noon to 4pm and will include, but not limited to, a silent art show exhibition (of all forms,) trading circles (bring clothes, books, art, jewelry, fabric, anything & everything,) a poetry open mic slam (bring your work,) literature and great speech reading (bring an excerpt of your choice,) sign culture teach-ins and painting, creation stations, open discussions, acoustic and local music, and on site silk screening, so bring a shirt! Artivism will be followed by another local event, bringing poetry, music and more funk from 4:30 to 9pm.

Artivism is a portmanteau, which combines both expressions of “art” and “activism” as a way of communicating through various creative mediums in order to bring awareness to the need for social, political, and environmental change. Author and artist, M.K. Asante Jr. writes:

“The artivist uses her artistic talents to fight and struggle against injustice and oppression—by any medium necessary. The artivist merges commitment to freedom and justice with the pen, the lens, the brush, the voice, the body, and the imagination. The artivist knows that to make an observation is to have an obligation.”

This is the concept that Occupy Rochester’s Artivism working group hopes to embody. Starting with the Global Day of Creative Action, we hope to kick start a community of local artists and activists who are seeking to take direct action against injustice and combat the suppression of the imagination. We want to make the message clear that we will no longer be silenced or subdued by working to bring life and beauty back to the City of Rochester.

We are asking you, community members and local artists, to bring YOUR artwork to share, poetry to read, stuff to trade, shirts to print, and music to make. We can’t support the growth of a new collaborative community without active participation.

This is an open invitation. Spread the word and bring your creative juices, your spoken word, your instruments, your dancing legs, all of your friends and join us on Sunday, February 12 at the Flying Squirrel on 285 Clarissa Street in the Corn Hill district.

I am calling for a protest today in Solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the other Occupations. We meet at Washington Square Park tonight at 6:30 and we march to the Liberty Pole where we will denounce the actions of the OPD against the Oakland Occupation. We need to make people aware of what is going on immediately! We will be at the Liberty Pole at 7:00pm EST showing support and Solidarity.

In response to the brutal police repression in Oakland yesterday
(including tear-gas, “flash” grenades, projectiles, mass arrests, and
a pregnant woman hit in the belly by a policeman’s baton) direct
action working groups from at least Occupy Wall St, Occupy Boston, and
Occupy Philly, have stayed up late to craft a massive coordinated
response. Here are the initial results:

Tweet about it with #solidaritysunday and/or #J29.

Here’s a draft messaging statement prepared by Occupiers from these
various cities (working collaboratively on etherpad, of course):

Yesterday, Occupy Oakland moved to convert a vacant building into a
community center to provide education, medical, and housing services
for the 99%. Police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets, beanbag
rounds, and mass arrests. The state has compounded its policy of
callous indifference with a ruthless display of violent repression.
The Occupy movement will respond, as we have always responded: with an
overwhelming show of collective resistance.

Today, January 29, we take to the streets. J29. Across the country, we
will demonstrate our resolve to overcome repression and continue to
build a better world grounded in love and solidarity for one another.
We will tell our country, the world, and our cities: another world is
possible and we will not stand for violent repression from the state
and the police.

All eyes on all Occupies.

Be creative! Be agile! BE ORGANIZED!

Statement Against SOPA

We, the 99%, call upon our elected representatives to oppose
censorship, and reject the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP
Act.

SOPA and the Protect IP Act would make it possible for the federal
government and judges to censor content on the Internet. The
government would be given the power to block access to websites and to
put websites on a DNS blacklist. Potentially, anything from Facebook
to your friend’s blog could be shut down for possible “copyright
infringement.” If SOPA becomes law, posting a video with any kind of
copyrighted material could be considered a felony.

Civil rights groups, leading technology companies, and hundreds of law
professors and lawyers oppose SOPA and the Protect IP Act. They
recognize that these bills threaten to break the internet’s
infrastructure and stifle the rights of people to freely express
themselves. We know multinational corporations have spent lots of
money lobbying our representatives to pass this legislation –
legislation that is clearly counter to the interests of the 99%.

Over the last decade, digital information networks have made it
possible for people around the world to communicate with each other
more freely than ever before. We have begun to truly realize our
shared humanity. But, the technology that has helped make this
possible is not yet under our control. So far, that infrastructure has
been operated with an eye toward liberty and justice; but, now we find
that our rights to privacy, assembly, and speech in cyberspace are
under attack.

We, the Rochester General Assembly of #OccupyRochester, recognize the
critical importance of a free and open internet. The openness of the
internet and our right to free speech is threatened by SOPA and
Protect IP. They must be stopped.
