Once widespread across Britain, there has been a serious decline in numbers over recent decades and populations have become fragmented. It is now mostly confined to parts of the Scottish uplands, with a few surviving strongholds in areas of Wales and the North of England. Black grouse is a high priority species for action by conservation organisations and the UK government, and is on the red list ofBirds of conservation concern: 2002-2007. Many landowners, managers and organisations want to reverse this decline and are working together in support of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for black grouse.
