Black grouse is one of the most rapidly declining birds in the UK. Once widespread across Britain, there has been a serious decline in numbers over recent decades and populations have become fragmented. It is now mostly confined to parts of the Scottish uplands, with a few surviving strongholds in areas of Wales and the North of England. Black grouse is a high priority species for action by conservation organisations and the UK government, and is on the red list ofBirds of conservation concern: 2002-2007.

Many landowners, managers and organisations want to reverse this decline and are working together in support of the UK Biodiversity Action Plan for black grouse. This website is designed for anyone who wants to learn about and help this special bird.
