Chrono Trigger Multiplayer Hands-on

We take the monster battling companion mode for a spin.

October 28, 2008October 28, 2008October 28, 2008

One of the greatest games to grace the Super Nintendo -- and also the #2 game of all time, according to you, our IGN readers -- is hitting the DS in just a few short weeks, and while everyone else passes the time with other DS titles, we're already diving intoChrono Trigger, checking out the new script, enjoying ourbeer drinking competitions instead of the "soda" we drank on Super NES here in America, and checking out the game's interesting, yet still somewhat mysterious multiplayer.

Some information on Chrono Trigger's multiplayer mode has gotten out already, but we've now gone hands-on with the mode ourselves, playing off of two different copies of the game in head-to-head local wireless, and are back to report. While there isn't any form of direct co-op or character-vs-character battle when it comes to the main quest in Chrono Trigger, each DS system (or save file, rather, of which you have three) is home to not only your traditional main quest found on Super NES and PSX, but also the new Arena of Ages battleground. Here, you'll be given a starter monster, have a chance to train and aid your character in battle, pour some cash from the main game into items and abilities for him, and eventually win matches and access new rare items as a reward.

Rather than being a direct add-on to the main quest, the Arena of the Ages is an otherworld, side offering. If you want to battle, you can. If you don't, the core Chrono Trigger experience is left untouched.

The actual Arena of Ages is pretty small, but it houses a lot of companion content to go with the main game. Upon entering, you'll meet up with the stable master, who is your go-to character for all missions and monster-based information. He'll kick things off by letting you select one of a few different smidges (a little slime-like critter) with different elemental affinities. I personally went with fire, but other options included water, light, and dark. As you could guess, each element is stronger or weaker against another, with each smidge also having a slight advantage over the other. In wireless battle, for example, my fire critter (who already came back from an initial training mission) was still lower in HP than a weaker water smidge. My strength was higher though, and I ultimately took the victory over the newcomer.

Once selecting your starter, the arena itself opens up a bit more, as you have access to a merchant, as well as a pit boss. The merchant sells specific items that can either be played during the otherwise automatic battles your monsters participate in (so you could throw in a hawk talon, for example, and temporarily raise your character's strength for that fight) or to attach to your monster when the go on a quest. When you first start out in the arena you'll have access to a few starter items, including slops (health), the elemental-based flameclaw, seafang, duskeye, and luxwing (aiding in fire, water, dark, and light attacks respectively), the previously mentioned hawk talon, a shield cloak that reduces damage taken by 33%, and a critical-boosting attack called Feral Wrath, which effectively quadruples your character's chance at landing a gigantic knock-out blow.
