Time for a Fetch Refresh?

In the Fetch FTP client, if you see a time stamp like "As of 6/19/10 2:29 PM" above the file list, that means that Fetch is re-using a file list it downloaded earlier. Click the swooshing-arrow refresh button (located beside the time stamp) to refresh the list.

iBookstore Finally Appears in iTunes

In a quiet move, Apple has added the iBookstore to iTunes, so you can now browse for and purchase books from your Mac. But you still can’t read them on the Mac with any program from Apple; for that you’ll need to use iBooks on an iOS device or an independent application.

Update to Flash Player 10.3.181.22

Adobe has released an update to Flash Player that both fixes an important security vulnerability and provides automatic update notification for the future.

As we noted in our coverage, the whole Lodsys patent mess won’t end until Lodsys allows it to end, despite Apple’s contention that iOS developers are covered by Apple’s license with Lodsys. ZDNet is now reporting that Lodsys has posted additional screeds on its blog, defending its position and offering a bizarre $1,000 payment to targeted developers if Apple turns out to be right. It’s getting really weird, and you have to assume that there will be significant discussion of the situation at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference this week.

Apple Flexes Muscle in WWDC 2011 Keynote

With the WWDC 2011 keynote, Apple showed off just how powerful the company has become, both by announcing not one, not two, but three full-fledged platforms, and by sharing numerous statistics that paint a pretty picture of Apple’s current and future business prospects.

Guy Kawasaki to Keynote MacTech Conference 2011

MacTech Magazine has announced that Guy Kawasaki will be keynoting the MacTech Conference 2011 in November.

Apple has started a replacement program to fix MacBooks whose rubber surface is separating from the bottom case. The program covers MacBooks shipped between October 2009 and April 2011 that are exhibiting the problem. You can take an affected MacBook to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to be fixed, or order a replacement kit online and do the work yourself.

Once again, Adam joined Andy Ihnatko, Chris Breen, John Gruber, and Leo Laporte for MacBreak Weekly, where the tremendously enjoyable conversation ranged from geek hair care (Gruber relies on a Perl script!) to Apple Legal’s response to Lodsys to what we might see in a forthcoming iCloud music service from Apple.

Apple has announced the release of the iWork app suite — Pages, Keynote, and Numbers — for the iPhone and iPod touch. Each of these apps costs $9.99 for new users, but they’re free updates for those who own the iPad versions.

Apple to Unveil Lion, iOS 5, and iCloud in WWDC Keynote

In a brief press release, Apple has announced that Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives would deliver the keynote at next week’s Worldwide Developer Conference, unveiling Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5, and the company’s much-rumored cloud-services offering: iCloud.

No Email Issue on 30 May 2011 for Memorial Day

We're taking a brief break from building an email issue of TidBITS this week in honor of the Memorial Day holiday in the United States, so look for the next issue in your mailbox on 6 June 2011.

Sparrow 1.2

Adds support for Facebook connections, Subject-based threading, interface changes, and a number of bug fixes. ($9.99 via the Mac App Store, free update, 11.9 MB)

Google’s Gmail group has announced that it will be rolling out a new “people widget” that will display information about people involved in a Gmail conversation, including links to recent messages from them, Buzz posts, shared documents, and calendar events. It hasn’t appeared in our accounts yet, but we’ll be curious if it will supplant Rapportive for us.

Amazon Takes Aim at the Mac App Store

In an unexpected move, Amazon has taken the wraps off the Mac Downloads Store. It doesn’t have the selection or integration of the Mac App Store, but Apple suddenly has some competition that didn’t exist before.

Apple Responds to Increasingly Serious MacDefender Situation

In an unusual about-face, Apple has gone from telling AppleCare reps not to help callers remove MacDefender infections to releasing a support document explaining how to do it along with a security update to Mac OS X 10.6.7 to stop MacDefender and its variants. Hopefully it will also stop MacGuard, the new variant Intego has found that doesn’t even require an admin password to install.

Apple Tells Lodsys That iOS Developers Are Covered

iOS developers are breathing easier after Apple Legal has weighed in on the Lodsys patent infringement claims, asserting that developers are indeed covered by Apple’s license of the Lodsys patents.

Why Laptop Bags Are So Heavy

Annoyed by the shoulder-crushing weight of his laptop bag, Adam strips it and weighs absolutely every item to see where the weight is really coming from. Although there aren’t any huge surprises, nearly 30 percent of the weight could have been jettisoned.

GadgetTrak has added a feature that enables users to file police reports directly from within the theft recovery service’s Web-based control panel. Over 150 police agencies in the United States offer online filing of police reports, and if your GadgetTrak-enabled device is lost within one of those areas, you can now more quickly involve law enforcement in your loss.
